There’s a new coffee shop where everything apparently costs $2. Two bucks?
Espresso Matto, the coffee and pastry chain that discounted everything at its 95th Street location and then closed last year, has now opened a new location on Columbus between 85th and 86th Street. “Everything is $2 – large or small drinks, all food items too. The croissant with scrambled eggs is quite tasty as are the lattes,” Christine says. How can you run a coffee shop on the Upper West Side and charge $2 for everything? Don’t ask questions, just go in and get some! Thanks to Christine for the photo.
Sugar Factory, which is going into the former Ollie’s at 1991 Broadway (68th, next to the Apple store) is now taking reservations starting Feb. 8, after initially saying it would open on Dec. 1. The rendering above appears to show the entrance, with a carousel on the right. Yes, a carousel! Sugar Factory serves cavity-inducing beverages and apparently attracts celebrities. People Instagram a lot when they’re there. Thanks to Arie for the tip.
Nail studio Pinky UWS at 73rd and Amsterdam is getting a French makeover, or at least its name is getting one. Welcome to “Le Jolie Nail Studio.” Hannah tells us the management has changed but the staff will stay the same. Bonjour Le Jolie! Thanks also to Wendi for the tip.
Kirsh Bakery & Kitchen at 551 Amsterdam (86th-87th) recently launched dinner service. Highlights include the Lobster French Toast with lemon butter and tarragon, and the Braised Lamb Shank with root vegetables, red wine, pomegranate juice and gremolata. See the full menu here.
The “French” nail salon should learn some French. Either “Le Joli” (no e) or “La Jolie”.
The French word for nail, ongle, is masculine. But the expression “le joli ongle” is pretty weird, in any event. I try not to notice anymore.
Touché!!!!
Love them typos….
I don’t know how Kirsh competes with Orwasher’s so close by. Orwasher’s has the best baugettes, incredible bagels…
Orwashers’ prices are EXORBITANT, that’s how. imo.
Guess you’ve never had Kirsh’s potato rosemary bread… So good!
Orwashers is the best. Typos and all.
The $2.00 at Matto is for a limited time only…they are obviously trying to get people in to try them out.
Looked at Sugar Factory’s website and menu. Mostly hype. Their website “brags” about the different celebrities that visit (yes, Kardashians). The food menu offers several expensive prix fixe family style options with the least expensive being $49 per person. And even the dessert package is $49 per person. I don’t think it will last a year here on the UWS.
It would be great if their website had the UWS regular menu, not just the party menu.
Isn’t the one on Broadway at 95th a Filicori Zecchini? Two different chains.
There was a lawsuit which one of the commenters on your original post clued me in on, but the tl;dr is that they are two different companies. Espresso Matto are the $2 for everything people, Filicori Zecchini are the fancy Italian coffee people.
The 95th street location is no longer Expresso Matto. It has reverted to its original name Filicori Zecchini. During its Matto phase it has the $2 specials.
