Fireworks in Central Park for this year’s marathon. Photo by Jon Del Bene.
Fireworks will kick off the new year in Central Park. The show starts just before midnight, along with the start of a four-mile race from the New York Road Runners.
The fun begins at 10:00 p.m. with a rockin’ dance party at Rumsey Playfield for runners and their guests. Stop by the face painting station to add a finishing touch to your festive look, then add your New Year’s resolution to our Resolution Wall for all to see.
Please note: The Start Area and Pre-Race Festival, located at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, will be open to registered runners and their guests only. The general public may still view fireworks from south of 72nd Street inside the park, and will be subject to security screening at any park entrance south of 72nd Street. For more information, please visit NYRR’s Midnight Run event webpage.
Happy New Year, West Side Rag readers!
Happy New Year!
This is the first year in 40-something years of going to the park to watch the runners and the fireworks that the NYPD hasn’t let non-runners into the Park at 72nd Street. What a hassle it was to walk to 72nd only to find that all were being turned away and forced down to the 67th Street entrance – where it was MOBBED. I understand that due to problems in other European cities NYPD wanted to keep the crowd tight and together. But it was just awful – like jamming half a million people into a phone booth.
