Celebrate independent bookstores and toast a local playground on Saturday!
Both Book Culture at 450 Columbus Avenue (81st-82nd) and Bankstreet Books at 2780 Broadway (107th street) will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday.
Book Culture is holding two events. There’s a community coloring event starting at 10 a.m.:”Join booksellers and your neighbors as we color a giant poster outside the store. Stop by for a minute or stay for hours. Coloring outside the lines is encouraged!” And there’s a cocktail event from 4 to 7 p.m.: “Swing by for an afternoon cocktail inspired by literature. Our two mixes are from local author Tim Federle’s Tequila Mockingbird..”
Bankstreet is devoting the day to children’s books. “On Saturday, April 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., stop by Bank Street Book Store for family fun with fantastic children’s book authors and artists. Meet super stars from the world of kid’s lit.” See the list of authors here.
Meanwhile, the Friends of Anibal Aviles Playground on West 108th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus are celebrating the fact that they received their first meaningful funding in 25 years with a party on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“There will be music, refreshments, face-painting and gardening. This gem of a playground in Manhattan Valley on the Upper West Side has enormous Plane trees that shade it from the hot summer sun, and when the water sprinkler set to start in June, it blossoms into a lovely little park that just needs a little more love. Everyone is invited and anyone can come. Hope you can join us. Please pass this along to friends and neighbors, a poster has been attached to this email.”
