Get on your unicycle and celebrate! We made it through snowmageddon!
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now says that the snowfall that lasted from January 22 to January 23 this year was the largest ever, measuring a record 27.5 inches. The NOAA had previously said the snow was 26.8 inches deep, just shy of the record of 26.9 made in 2010.
That 0.1 of an inch felt like such a bummer, like when your favorite figure skater loses by 0.1 points because of the Russian judge (what, you don’t have a favorite figure skater?).
But there was apparently a mixup between the record-keepers and the Central Park Conservancy, whose volunteers measure snow in the park. When the scientists went back and read through the conservancy’s log book, they realized the error and gave snowstorm Jonas the credit it deserved.
Check out the amazing photos our readers sent in of the snowstorm here.
Congratulations Jonas! You can pick up your award, a coupon for a free McFlurry at McDonalds, at the NOAA offices between 9-5 on weekdays. 🙂
I didn’t know Steve Harvey volunteered at the Central Park Conservancy!
i’ll take a pageant reference ANY day. thank you kevin.
Don’t forget the 12/26/47 snowstorm that left 26. 4 inches. It was the memory of a lifetime…I’m glad this generation of kids will have their own memories of just how much fun a big
snow storm is.
