New flower-shaped gelato and baked goods are here, as sushi and tea spots close their doors.
Amorino Gelato opened its doors at at 414 Amsterdam Avenue (80th), on April 1. John Peck got a photo of some of their flower-shaped gelato scoops, and then promptly ate the evidence. Thanks to Maria for the tip.
Le Pain Quotidien is up and running in Verdi Square at 72nd street and Broadway. Will it spruce up a park that some locals have complained has gotten run down?
Planet Sushi on 78th street and Amsterdam has closed its doors and promises a new concept coming soon. Thanks to Peter and Gavan for the tips.
Palais de Thes on Columbus between 68th and 69th appears to have closed for good. A sign on the window promises “we will be back,” but a “store for rent” sign next to it indicates it won’t be at that space. Thanks to Marc for the tip.

Can’t say I’m bummed about Planet Sushi. I find it far inferior to some of the other sushi joints in the area. Hopefully we’ll get something great in its place!
So bummed about “Sushi Planet” as my daughter calls it, which is her favorite place to eat out. They were always so nice when we dined there and we loved their fast delivery!
I never understood how they remained in that location for so long since I never saw anyone in there, and yes, their offerings were inferior…
Looks tasty, but those are going to drip all over the place if you don’t eat them fast.
Re Amorino Gelato: It’s not just a gimmick with flower-shaped cones–it’s the best gelato I’ve had!
Oldie, but no longer a goodie. Planet Sushi was the go to sushi place in the late 1980’s early 90s. It was the only place on the UWS where you could get late night good sushi (by the standards back then and at 2am!)
Now, they just suck – for last 10+ years.
Here’s a new concept for Planet Sushi: clean up the place and get an A rating.
Spence is right! (Not that I would ever eat sushi.)
Bring back the Copper Hatch.
I’m glad they brought back the comments! I was worried someone was going to open a bank branch in their place.
You win the internets for today!
Winning comment OMG lol
I wish we had a like button for this comment.
?? I could not resist.
They would always hide their bad Health Department rating behind another sign in their window.
Amorino Gelato is the best gelato I have ever had too!
What is the best sushi place on the UWS?
We really like Kouzan on 93rd and Amsterdam, for both delivery and eating in.
Kouzan is a terrific, locally owned sushi place. The staff is absolutely fantastic, and the food terrific. We absolutely love this place!
Technically not UWS, but I think Jado sushi (114th and Frederick Douglas) w/ Nakajima-san is very high quality.
But I also like Haru.
On the UWS, probably Sushi Yasaka (although they’ve gone downhill).
My favorite sushi delivery place is Fuji Sushi, at 56th and 8th. Not UWS but their delivery is so fast it may as well be. Excellent food, and the salmon sashimi just melts in your mouth.
I know you mentioned UWS sushi places but should you venture down to Union Square, Edo Sushi on 17th street between the park and 5th ave. Their rolls are cheap but very delicious and fresh. They are kind of a hole in the wall so you have to keep your eyes peeled when looking for it.
Empire on Columbus aint bad
@Lucien Sushi Yasaka is great, on 72nd. And Sushi of Gari, but that’s very pricey.
Second the Copper Hatch idea.
Don’t remember when Verdi Park was known as Needle Park? Hardly run down in comparison to the 70″s
I wish that Mariage Freres teas from Paris would open a shop somewhere in the city. I seem to remember that they announced an opening several years ago, but it never happened.
Correction to last week re Bella Luna. It’s not closing. It’s just moving one block south to the space now occupied by Secret Garden which is moving to Amsterdam later this spring
