THE SINKHOLE OF 96TH STREET RETURNETH

The intersection of 96th street and West End Avenue has had a troubling tendency to sink into the soft underbelly of New York City in the past couple of weeks. While city workers had seemed to have patched the problem last weekend, it reemerged on Saturday (the new hole appears to be in a slightly different spot than the old one).

As seen in the series of photos below, workers were in the process of fixing it again Saturday night. We’re trying to get some information on why this particular problem doesn’t seem to be going away.

On Friday, someone placed a cone in a hole that had developed on 96th and West End, but no workers were on sight as of Saturday morning. Photo by Ernie Fritz.

By 2 p.m., police had begun cordoning off the area. A garbage can was also placed in part of the hole. Photo by Jordan Cooper.
