All it takes is a visit to your local gym, and you will see people engaged in many types of training programs, most of which don’t match their goals, level of fitness, health history or time constraints.
A lot of these training programs are done by SITTING down using the machines. Machine training is not always a poor method of training, especially if you have an orthopedic or neurological problem that prevents you from standing, are recovering from an injury where you need to isolate specific muscles or if you’re a beginner and don’t have much guidance. So machine training is best for some people for a certain amount of time, but then it’s time to progress to STANDING.
Jason Greenspan, owner of Silver Stars Fitness.
Think about all the sitting we do throughout the day. Why would we want to go to the gym and sit even more? Sitting, as we know, is the worst thing for our body as it causes weakness and tightness that eventually causes pain. It also is a sedentary behavior that can contribute to decreased heart health.
At Silver Stars we don’t only encourage all of our clients to stand unless they can’t, but to perform exercises or movements that require the use of a lot of muscles versus isolating muscles which typically occur while sitting on machines.
Life requires us to balance, use our core to maintain proper posture and to use a lot of muscles, such as when standing from a sitting position, lunging, stepping, pushing, pulling, rotating and balancing. All of our movements are based upon activities that are needed for real life. We also focus on improving balance, agility, power (your ability to walk or stand from a chair faster) agility, quickness, coordination, flexibility & mobility and of course encourage good sleeping and nutritional habits.
The take-home point is that unless you’re a bodybuilder (and the majority of us aren’t) it is best to perform exercises that involve many muscles working at the same time and to STAND unless you can’t due to an orthopedic or neurological issue.
