MOUNTAINS OF RECYCLING GROW IN THE MID-70’S

Delayed garbage pickup has left heaps of clear recycling bags on some Upper West Side blocks for over a week. Joseph Bolanos, president of the West 76th Street Block Association, sent in these photos of the pile-up, and CBS interviewed a local woman who said “Frankly, it’s disgusting and it’s attracting rats.”

The Department of Sanitation had its last pickup on Dec. 28 and 29 and planned to do its next pickup Friday, according to CBS. As of Friday around 11 a.m., it hadn’t been picked up yet, Bolanos noted. But at least someone from the DOS was working in the neighborhood. A DOS agent handed out tickets like the one below on Thursday for having household waste in cartons out front of buildings on 76th.

By the way, after CBS covered it, the story was picked up by some British papers that sometimes link to New York news — the headline from the Express includes some charming British-isms: “Mountains of rubbish left on streets as binmen fail to show up after New Year’s.” Those silly binmen!

Whining about recycling? Block associations are hilarious, all you have to do is wait a few days. President of a block association? What a pointless title.

There’s already an UWS-er name here….and that’s not a comment I’d make. Feel free to be UWS-er 2 or something else though!

I’m really shocked that such and original name like “UWS-er” on a blog about the UWS was already “taken”…glad someone has “claimed” it for themselves…btw I hope no one plans on naming any of their kids “James” or “John” because those names are all taken!

Funny how DOS gave summonses to buildings for household waste in cartons. What they really need to do is walk along West 72nd. St., especially between West End and Broadway, and see the filth strewn all over the blocks in front of businesses. I walk there nearly every day.. never fails, trash all over the sidewalk. The businesses should get summonses for not keeping the area in front of there buildings clean!

It’s hard for businesses and landlords to keep up with the pigs that roam the streets of NY and litter.

I’d like to see some littering tickets given out to pedestrians.

Recycling is a scam! Read this piece in the NY Times – in many cases, such as recycling paper, it is more damaging to the environment due to the chemicals use to bleach the paper and water used to clean the plastic!!

I called 311 to report the problem. They said they were not taking complaints about sanitation issues. So since it isn’t recorded, it isn’t a problem.
In the past, sanitation pickup was scheduled for a different day to makeup for the loss of garbage pickup on a holiday. Not so anymore and no one wants to listen about the problem with it including rat infestation, etc.

That must be how DeBlasio is improving the city..don’t record the complaints and then you can say there aren’t any! The man is a genius among other things I won’t mention!
