We got this notice about a missing dog on Tuesday night.
Hi! I lost my black Havanese dog named Illy this evening between 7-8PM between 86th/Amsterdam & 74th/Broadway.
She had no collar or leash but has a microchip.
UPDATE: Illy was found on 76th street by a couple who saw a poster for her. The couple declined the $5,000 reward that the owners had put up.
Shame on this dog owner. No leash and no collar?!?! My biggest nightmare as a dog owner is my dog getting loose/away from me some how so I take every precaution I can on walks. Why are there still people who think it’s acceptable to bring their dogs around off-leash? My heart breaks for this poor defenseless domesticated dog who is probably running through the streets terrified — that is if it is still alive and hasn’t been hit by a car or dognapped for some nefarious purpose like dogfighting. Dog owners please please please be responsible and always leash your dog. Just having a microchip isn’t enough. Save yourself and your dog the heartache.
AA, you are right that this was a bit presumptive, but I have to ask how the “no lease and no collar” thing happens. Even if a dog escapes out the door, wouldn’t they have the building to get through before getting out on the street? And even if they were inside, wouldn’t they have a collar on? Both of which led me to suspect someone letting their dog run around, or having them in a carry bag without closing it, without a lease to protect the dog.
Perhaps we all (frankly, both you and ShameOnYou) shoudl be less vehemenbt in our comments, but there is no question that some dog owners – though perhaps not this one – do let their dogs go around off leash in circumstances where it is clearly dangerous for the dog. Sometimes that seems to be motivated by a mistaken impression that the dog is happier that way (or perhaps the dog is happier, but the assessment of risk – the human’s responsibility – is off base). That really does trouble me because I do not like to see the animals put at risk by their owners’ foolishness. Well-intentioned or not, ti is wrong to put a dog at risk in that way.
Though, again, perhaps that is not what happened here, so perhaps we can all express our concerns without being so strong in our tones.
Though, now that I think further, I think it was presumptuous, not presumptive. And perhaps the little muppet did slip out of its collar. My dog did that once and he has worn a harness ever since . . . .
Erica: Clearly you miss the point too. Yes, tone could have been softer. But I was pissed. I have no idea how this dog escaped, nor do I care. It’s irrelevant. The purpose of the original post was to help an owner look for a lost dog. That is the benefit of such a wonderful community-oriented blog such as this. No one needs to be lectured about how to care for their pets.
So, your tone is excused because you were piased because people don’t need lectures. I assume that ShameInYou’s tone is then also excused because s/he was pissed because animals do need responsible owners.
Your name should be “Presumptive and Arrogant” not “Shame on You”. How the hell do you know the circumstances of the dog’s disappearance? Perhaps the dog ran out of the apartment when a delivery an opened the door. How is this helpful? Why don’t you spend your time looking for the dog instead of lecturing our readers about dognapping and dogfighting? What a jerk.
Well said. ShameOnYou, am I correct to assume that you’re the one who thought it would be constructive to write “SHAME ON OWNER!” on a few posters? It wasn’t. Are you part of the problem, or are you part of the solution?
I’m kind of with Shame On You.
While we don’t know the circumstances, the fact that the area where the dog was lost is so broad suggests that the owner is fairly clueless. How do you now know where you last saw your lost dog?
I feel bad for the dog and all dogs who have irresponsible owners.
Please put up signs with color pictures on the lightposts up and down B’way and on the side streets. So sorry. Will keep an eye out.
86TH Amst-74TH Bway? Thats a pretty broad area.
I “lost” a foster dog who bolted away into the night on my watch over 10 years ago when I lived in the city of Atlanta. At the time I was not working, and I spent days and days roaming the streets, talking to people and putting up signs. There were many sightings, but in the end Chester suffered the worst possible outcome. Losing a dog is an incredibly painful experience for anyone and any dog to suffer through. Blaming and shaming helps no one and no dog. Let’s do all we can to get this little soul home where she belongs. Hoping, wishing, sending positive thoughts from the UWS.
I saw a missing poster on this dog on 73rd/Amsterdam this morning. They’re offering a $5,000 reward. They clearly care about their dog and we don’t know the circumstances (slipped out of collar?). The wide area suggests they tried to catch her and lost sight of her. I hope they find her. Very sad.
Happy ending! Fantastic!
So glad they found the dog. I bet the dog broke out of her collar while walking and ran. So scary but good to know it ended on a happy note.
Having been spared the reward payment, I’d hope the owners might consider an appropriate contribution to a local rescue shelter or similar charitable organization.
I hope so too. Although some pet insurance policies have a provision that will put up the cash in case a pet is lost and found.
Yes, I agree. A generous donation would be such a nice thing to do.
i hope the owners now take the dog on a long walk to remove all the flyers. they’re everywhere. i took a few down only to find more all over broadway.
What an outrage!
