A Community Education Council (school board) committee will talk about public school zoning on Monday night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 154 West 93rd Street, room 204. Some popular local schools, including PS 199, could be rezoned in the coming year. To see the kinds of controversies this can cause, check out what’s happening in DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights.
On Saturday, October 3, Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell is sponsoring a no-cost mammogram screening with Project Renewal in conjunction with Friends of Straus Park’s “Art in the Park.” It will take place on the south side of Straus Park (W 106th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue). The event will be from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Women who are 40 years or older, live in New York City, and have not received a mammogram in the past 12 months are automatically eligible to receive a no-cost mammogram. If women meet these criteria but are under 40 years of age, they may be eligible to receive a no-cost mammogram. To schedule an appointment for a mammogram, please call Project Renewal at 1-800-564-6868.

News:
Part of La Perla Garden on West 105th street could be sold, as owners of some of the land have seen their taxes rise precipitously. “A sale of the property, which is assessed at about $350,000, would very likely mean that a residential development would be built atop what are now a dozen fecund four-foot by eight-foot raised beds of earth and abundance…For [gardener Elizabeth] Hall, the sale and consequent disruption of what she and others consider a neighborhood jewel would be a significant loss for the gardeners, certainly, but also for nearby residents who use the garden as an oasis of sorts.”
Congregation Shearith Israel was sued by an employee who claimed she was fired for having premarital sex. “Alana Shultz — a longtime program director for Congregation Shearith Israel, the oldest synagogue in the US — failed to ‘adhere to their religious morals’ by getting married when she was already about five months pregnant, her suit says.”
An ex-convict on crutches was arrested for robbing Santander Bank on 103rd and Broadway: “Herlene Lawton, 64, wasn’t even out of the pokey two months for the 2013 heist when she hobbled into the Santander Bank at Broadway and 103rd Street on crutches Sept. 9 and allegedly demanded dough.”
Construction is finally set to start on the playground on 89th street next PS 166 that had become a battleground between preservationists and some parents.
Looking for a “bargain” on a mansion? “The Kleeberg Residence—a stunning, 18-room, 11,000-square-foot mansion at 3 Riverside Drive on the Upper West Side—made a splash in 2013 when it hit the market asking a whopping $40 million. Now, two years later and after a few months spent off the market, the French Renaissance Revival home has received a 33 percent slash in price, and it’s now asking a (slightly) less bonkers $27 million.”
Under the Affordable Care Act, ANY woman who has health insurance is entitled to a free mammogram. I hope that the offers by Assemblymembers Daniel O’Donnell and Linda Rosenthal make it more convenient.
What about those that don’t have health insurance? This is a very good service and should be applauded.
