We’ve had 48 straight days with temperatures over 80 degrees in Central Park, a new record!

This is attractive unless it is under your apartment and you have to listen to the generator running and the lights are in your eyes when you look out the window. I suppose Montana is the alternative.
Does anyone know what causes that disgusting smell that seems to hang over the sidewalk on the west side of Broadway between 76th and 77th (basically, from 76th up to where Westside Market is)?
Hmmmmm! Perhaps your are referring to Lush (cosmetics shop) OR Beard Papa (Japanese cream puff shop)? Both emit odd/strong smells.
Perhaps. But the smell seems stronger by the street. There always seems to be some liquid of some kind pooled in the street by the curb, even on dry days, but I’ve never wanted to go over and see if that’s where it’s coming from, because it’s just so offensive that I try to get through that block as quickly as possible.
Oh that smell. My bad. Yes I actually stepped in that years ago and it does smell bad. At the time I chalked it up to Nikos restaurant, which was located on the corner as they would dump liquids in the sewage and/or curb often. Perhaps it is a bad drainage/sewage system or something to that affect or someone else is dumping some liquids there instead of properly disposing of it.
The homeless. Formerly known as bums. On the UWS they are known as the domicile challenged who are not responsible for their behavior. They are the vicitms of our racist, classist, elitist NYC culture. Oh the shame.
Re: “They are the vicitms of our racist, classist, elitist NYC culture.”
Pure Librul B.S.
But, okay, let’s PRETEND (to set up our “straw-man”) that there has always been some racism, classicism, and elitism in NYC.
So please explain exactly HOW:
1)the dirt-poor immigrants who flocked to Five Points, or the Lower East Side, or Kleine Deutschland, or any of the other new-arrival communities DIDN’T REMAIN POOR AND PENNY-LESS THEIR ENTIRE LIVES?; or
2) how many, many young people of color MANAGE TO ESCAPE THEIR BACKGROUNDS AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL MEMBERS OF SOCIETY; or
3) how many new immigrants, from all over the globe, come here and STAY because they are doing better than they ever could have back home AND THEIR CHILDREN WILL DO EVEN BETTER!
Maybe it’s because this city (and nation) OFFERS UNLIMITED OPPORTUNITIES to anyone who has the determination and drive to succeed. And they did this despite whatever racism, classicism, or elitism existed then and probably still exists today.
One thing they never did was to GIVE UP.
Maybe there’s a lesson there.
I was being sarcastic. I was mocking what passes for commemtary here. If I post truthful accurate statements they arent posted.
Have any of you ever worked with homeless families, who refuse to make use of the “unlimited opportunities”, who mug us, shoplift, and god knows what else. Ever sit down and work with them? Four, five years, couple of night shift, then come talk about ‘racism, classicism, or elitism’, and we’ll talk.
Sadly, homeless on street in many parts of Manhattan not to mention people in NYC shelters – including many families.
Also throughout U.S. The number of street homeless in LA is unbelievable. Homeless people in Burlington, Vemont to Minneapolis to SF.
It is not unique to NYC.
Sad but true. LA tries to hide the fact they have 50,000+ street homeless. Thwre are tents and encampments everywhere. Plus they have skid row- a 50 block neighborhood exclusively for mentally ill addicts- thousands of them. Look it up.
The mental institutions were emptied out into the streets decades back; that is part of the problem. The other is the availability of illegal drugs that has spawned more addicts. These people need our attention.
However, there are also what I call the “Career Homeless”. Here, in the south part of the UWS, we have those who arrive during our good weather, and sit on the streets and beg. It seems to be their chosen “vocation”.
Does anyone know what happened to Farinellis, the pizza place that was supposed to open at 73rd and Amsterdam? Seems like it’s been a while since it was first announced.
Dale — “Within two weeks”, the Lexington Avenue store told me today.
I peeked in just yesterday and see the interior looks finished. seems like it should open soon.
Two weeks ago, the door was open and I saw construction work. The place had been tiled all in white.
What is happening with Monk?
Is he still around?
Steven – I just came onto west side rag to post a question about this very same smell. It’s SO bad and I live around the corner so pass that block very often. Smells like sewage. I wonder if there is any way to do something about it. Complain to the city? Maybe westside supermarket dumps stuff?
Yes we all notice that awful smell-many blocks on the UWS smell bad.it does seem like sewage. Please call 311 and gale brewer and linda rosenthal and helen rosenthal and everyone and anyone. Btw have you noticed those filthy jammed up free paper boxes? The ones on West end and 72nd are disgusting germ
breeding boxes. As are the ones near Papaya King. To top it off tonight around 6 on my way home–I saw a homeless girl with a full shopping cart and all her possessions on the sidewalk in front of Trader joe’s and several feet away a large man with his pants down in the back laying on the sidewalk near Duane reade. It’s too much. First Bloomberg gave times square to the tourists and now the UWS has been abandoned. This neighborhood looks like a “failed state”. Does the West village or the upper east side have better council members or what? We need help here.
Yes. Correct- it is the homeless. If you dont shower during an NYC summer what do you think they are going to smell like? Thanks DiBlasio!
CJ, I welcome the new daytime Times Square, with tourists relaxing under the sun as though “here” is their home, and with hosts of workers resting on their breaks, often with their brown-bagged lunch. Also, I treasure the boundary from pollution and traffic noise.
I have a heavy heart, though, about the swell of tourism here since 9/11, when the “hated New Yorker” seem to suddenly become part the Union. But I try hard to save it for 9/11.

Oh yes, those awful, hopelessly philistine tourists! What a blight they are upon our cultured, enlightened, progressive city.
If only we could get rid of them —and all that filthy lucre they bring in— entirely.

Lots of middle ground btw that and Montana!
