DRIVER FLIPS CAR ON 71ST, WALKS AWAY

flipped car

From the Department of How on Earth Did This Happen?

Marianne awoke with a start early Sunday morning to see a Mercedes Coupe sitting in the middle of the street. The roof was where the wheels should be.

“I woke up around 4 AM when I heard a huge bang and yelling. I saw car turned over on its roof on 71st St. between West End and the river. I went downstairs and ask police what had happened and they said that a man who had turned 21 today, totally drunk, with his girlfriend had flipped the car. They crawled out of the windows and did not have A scratch on them.

The perplexing thing is, how could they have flipped the car, and not hit any other cars or buildings in this narrow street.”

I live at 235 WEA, corner of WEA and 71st. It was a little passed 4am when a loud bang and scraping metal noise woke me up. Then some voices asking “Hey, are you ok man?” Then sirens and more sirens. Turns out some guy had stolen a car and he and his “girl friend” decided to race down 71st street and as they crossed over WEA the care took flight as it raced past WEA (the road elevates) and flipped over. The guy ran away but was later caught by the police while the woman was in pretty bad shape back inside the car. Somehow none of the dozens of cars parked on the street were even scratched.

i live on this street and cannot comprehend how you could flip a car and NOT hit another car? My only guess is perhaps they were racing down – it’s a cul de sac with metal roles stopping you from getting thru to the other side where the Trump buildings are – and hit those.

Idiots.

Re: “Marianne awoke with a start early Sunday morning to see a Mercedes Coupe sitting in the middle of the street.”

What a GREAT first sentence for a short story! It sounds like something James Thurber might have written.

Let’s hope someone out there “takes the bait” and runs with it (Mixed Metaphors Served Here).

🙂

How does one flip a car at less than 25 mph on a dead-end street?

Because he was driving at around 80-90mph and there is a considerable “bump” crossing West End Avenue on 72st Street, which if driving over at very high speeds can send the car flying or at a minimum off balance causing it to potentially loose control and even roll over as was the case here. The more interesting question is how did they manage to avoid hitting any of the cars parked on both sides of the street!?!?! The car somehow scraped along the middle of the street for 50-75 yards coming to a stop dead center of the road right across a fire hydrant.

“The perplexing thing is, how could they have flipped the car, and not hit any other cars or buildings in this narrow street.”

This is a special safety feature built into Mercedes Benzes. It is, of course, more to protect the shiny paint on one’s own Mercedes than to protect the property or lives of those peasants parked on the street.
