UNDERGROUND SUBWAY MALL STILL EXPECTED TO OPEN THIS YEAR

The underground mall planned for the Columbus Circle subway station was expected to open in the middle of this year, but as of last month it was still empty, with little evidence of work having been done. It won’t be stalled for long, however — new financing from Goldman Sachs should get the project off the ground shortly, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article.

The underground mall, which we last wrote about here, will have a food court and several smaller retail shops, mostly selling grab-and-go items. The food stores that have reportedly signed on include Magnolia Bakery, Ignazio’s Pizza, and organic cafe shop Ellary’s Greens. In total, there are expected to be 34 shops, and 75% of the spaces had been leased by the end of May, according to the Journal. Rents are about $300 per square foot, or about half the price above-ground.

Right on!! Blame the stores, not the people who actually see the subway tracks as a trash can.

I hated to be flippant in Posting #1 above, but it hurts — it hurts — that space as immaculately cared-for as the Time-Warner public areas will have to defend itself against the rodents that always flock and thrive at the smell of underground food courts.

Just yesterday I walked that corridor – there are signs prominently posted about the staircases on 57th St. closing as of 10PM Monday, July 13. Use 58th St. exits. The barbershop will still be accessible they claim. So it’s happening…as of next week.

I really don’t understand what people are talking about. You have Penn Station which has several stores below ground in subway area, you have Grand Central Station which has a number of stores and kiosks as well. You don’t hear people screaming about rats and running for their lives. Get over it! It’s a great idea!
