This Sunday, June 14th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Columbus Avenue will be closed to traffic from 106th to 110th street and will host a myriad of family friendly activities, live music and great food.

The Columbus Amsterdam BID will present its first ever Columbus Avenue edition of Bloomingdale Family Days, There will be e-waste collection for recycling (10-4), composting demonstrations and textile recycling. Flavors of the World: A TASTE OF BLOOMINGDALE RESTAURANTS (1-3), live music from Grupo Internacional (1-5), dance lessons from Harlem Dance Club and salsa with TravelOn2. Bike New York will be conducting Learn To Ride classes from 12-2 (reservations required). Also a climbing wall from the NYPD with officers to guide climbers.

family days2Community organizations including the YMCA, Bloomingdale Family Program, Bloomingdale School of Music, and local businesses such as Dazzling Discoveries and Chef Toni’s Cooking School will have tables out, and many will have activities aimed at children. The Senior Center of the Red Oak will provide domino tables and a movement class.

The BID, serving Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues from 96th to 110th Streets, has been hosting Family Days on Amsterdam Avenue for 5 years. This is part of the NYC DOT Weekend Walks program, providing open access to NYC streets for neighborhood celebrations.

The BID is holding the event to bring the diverse community out to celebrate summer and to showcase some great local restaurants and organizations involved in making this such an attractive community.

family days1The Bloomingdale neighborhood name is part of  the neighborhood’s history, which included Bloomingdale Road, Bloomingdale Village, and Bloomingdale Square. The latest is Bloomingdale Restaurants, which seeks to promote all restaurants between 96th and 110th streets from park to park. There is a vibrant and varied restaurant culture north of 96th street, with mixed and wide-ranging flavors and dishes that are difficult to find elsewhere. Come try some of them out on Sunday: Isola on Columbus, Crepes on Columbus, Shahi Biryani, Miss Mamie’s Spoonbread Too, Freda’s Caribbean & Soul Cuisine, Curry King, Bistro Ten18, Tropical Sensation, and Casa Mexicana will be providing tastes from their menus. $3 gets you a small portion of food, $10 gets you four. You can pre-purchase tickets at the BID, 991 Amsterdam Ave or at their station on the day of the event.

Well, here we go again! It’s summer in the city! Time to visit the same potted plants that were for sale last summer! maybe pick up another pair of ty-dyed jeans, and a couple of pairs of sweat socks. Don’t know about anybody else, but I’m already looking forward to Labor Day! Have fun, Y’all!

Hostelling International USA – NYC will also be there. As a Bloomingdale neighborhood icon in the historic gothic red building on Amsterdam Ave. between 103rd and 104th streets, we host about a quarter-million overnights from around the world in a youth hostel setting. Stop by and say hi to Shannon and Glendaliz!
