Police talked a man off of a ledge on 83rd street between Columbus and Amsterdam late Wednesday night, after deploying an airbag beneath the building. The standoff lasted several hours, one resident told us.

The resident said she saw “a large police presence as well as 2 ESU vehicles” starting around 9:30 p.m. at 155 West 83rd street.

“An air bag has been deployed. There are many higher ups (white shirts and detectives). The area is roped off and the block is closed from Amsterdam to most likely Columbus. No one is allowed down the block, even though the official police tape doesn’t start until 165 building. I was told that if I left my building I wouldn’t be allowed back in.”

Our tipster told us the incident continued until well past 11:45 when she tried to go to sleep. At one point she heard the man yell “All I want to do is talk to her!”

The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation, according to NYPD.
