RESTAURANT NEWS & NOTES: TAVERN ON THE GREEN, A VOCE COLUMBUS, ‘BEST’ OUTDOOR CAFES

Feeling romantic and hungry? One website suggests heading to Isabella’s.

Don’t look now but Tavern on the Green has another new chef! The latest savior, Jeremiah Tower, lasted just a few months, before hitting the road and declaring mission accomplished: “The Tavern kitchen team and I have accomplished what we set out to do – a publicly acclaimed huge improvement in dining at the restaurant.  A great start: now Tavern has a foundation to build on,” he wrote on Twitter. Hmm, the Times review was not exactly a tour de force. The newest entrant in “who wants to be Tavern’s chef” is John Stevenson, most recently the chef at Russ & Daughters Cafe. Hey, if he can bring that Russ & Daughters magic to Tavern, the critics might just change their minds. We wish him luck!

A Voce Columbus also has a new chef at the helm, according to Gotham Magazine. “To cater to all the high-profile wining and dining that comes when you’re a glittery stone’s throw from billionaire’s row, this hot spot in the Time Warner Center (it shares a foor with Landmarc) has brought in a new executive chef, Riccardo Bilotta, whose mission is to engage some of the most sophisticated Italophiles in town. He’s reimagined the menu with such delectables as “Burratina,” an antipasto with beluga lentils and truffes; risotto with Maine lobster and brandy; and “Persico,” striped bass with poached celery, Brussels sprouts, fregola, and citrus cremosa.”

Guest of a Guest picked the most “romantic” UWS restaurants with outdoor seating. The list included Arco Cafe, Isabella’s, Regional, Arte Cafe, Cibo E Vino, Tolani, The Ellington, and Pier i Cafe in Riverside Park. Feel free to quibble in the comments.

Yes a designer can add a romantic feeling to a space but the real romance comes from the feeling you get when dining with that special someone!! We love Citron too!!!

Ellington in the Park, at previous site of Hudson Beach Cafe, is opening in next two weeks. Looks like it’s gonna be great! From coffee in am to dinner as sun sets.

Besides, the coyote will have eaten most of the rats by summertime anyway.

Bella Giardino on W 71 just off Columbus has a great outdoor garden eating area in the back. Beautiful setting and great food (cash only!) when weather is good.

LOL, so true Mark … but it’s like that almost everywhere. It always amuses me to walk to my dentist along 59th and CPW. Scores of tourists paying serious bucks to “dine” at outdoor tables … perfumed by exhaust fumes wafting together with the delicate fragrance of horse manure from the carriage horses across the street. NYC … it’s always something.
