ONE TWEET, AND A SLOPPY CONSTRUCTION SITE VANISHES

The intersection of 91st and Amsterdam on Monday morning.

The intersection of 91st and Amsterdam has been blocked for weeks if not months by a Con Edison construction site consisting of a sawhorse and some cones placed in the middle of the intersection over an exposed manhole.

Some notes written on the sawhorse said the site had been active since May and had no end date for the construction. But there never seemed to be workers there. Meanwhile, cars were driving up onto the sidewalk to avoid the mess, and the cones had been run over and sometimes pushed into the middle of the intersection. A woman was injured in a crash at that intersection (though it’s not clear where exactly she was hit or whether the Con Ed site had anything to do with that). We sent a note to Con Ed and 311 on twitter on Monday, and they pledged to look into it.

@westsiderag @nyc311 Thank you for notifying us. We are sending a crew to inspect.

— Con Edison (@ConEdison) July 14, 2014

By Tuesday, the construction equipment was gone.

Which is great!

But…maybe someone should have been monitoring it beforehand? The construction has now moved across the street, where a Con Ed truck is blocking the pedestrian intersection. Let’s hope that’s also temporary.

Awesome. It wasn’t just any “tweet,” though – it was a @westsiderag tweet!

Yes it looks like in front of my building West End Ave. @90th, it has the same cones & horses and has been there since December 2013. Not sure what they are doing but nothing is getting done.

Wow Thank you WEST SIDE RAG!! I complained about this in a post on the unfortunate accident. This thing has bothered me for months, and as evidenced by the fact that it was fixed so quickly, seems it really was just sloppy work on ConEd’s part. Happy this is gone, sorry we needed to involve a local media outlet to remove an obstruction from the middle of the road that placed there by the city…

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. When you see something amiss in your community, call 311 or tweet at the proper organization. But don’t be apathetic. Let someone know.

Great news!

Now- how about that “sink hole” at 78th and broadway (in front of la caridad) the sidewalk has been slowly sinking down over the past few months… about a month ago (i would guess) one of those same sawhorses has put up in the middle of the sidewalk. At the ramp to cross broadway, there are huge holes that are only getting bigger. Cones have been placed over the growing holes but they often get moved and, regardless, are a safety hazard.
Also, as a side note, at night I see rats scurrying into those holes…

Maybe we need another @westsiderag tweet to the rescue!!!!

This sinking in the sidewalk has been going on for over 6 months. First there was one orange cone then two. Now we have the sawhorse blocking about 1/2 the sidewalk as the sidewalk slowly sinks. This has been going on through all our snow this winter and now with the heavy rains….maybe “someone” is waiting for the earth to open up and the problem will just disappear.

I live nearby and agree that this should be fixed! Would love if WSR could bring some attention to the problem.

Something also has to be done with all the potholes in the streets. We had an awful winter and there are more of them than ever. I fell because of one and all I can say is thank god it was a green light for me. Otherwise I probably would have been hit or run over.
