Juilliard will hold a commencement ceremony this week, and will also be hosting several other performances.

Juilliard performers share their talent with the community in these free, hour-long lunchtime performances on Wednesday afternoons throughout the season. Performers from the Pre-College division close the 2013-2014 Wednesdays at One season.

Juilliard celebrates its 109th Commencement Ceremony by awarding diplomas to 289 (130 undergraduate and 159 graduate) actors, dancers, and musicians. Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi reads special citations and presents degrees to eight distinguished honorees, including actress and Juilliard alumna Viola Davis, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, architect Frank Owen Gehry, composer and Juilliard alumnus Philip Glass, choreographer and Juilliard alumnus Lar Lubovitch, jazz legend Marcus Roberts, and philanthropists Bruce and Suzanne F. Kovner. Joyce DiDonato gives the commencement address.

Juilliard String Quartet Seminar Recitals

Appearances by Aeolus Quartet, Argus Quartet, Omer Quartet, and Orava Quartet performing works by Bartók, Beethoven, Britten, Debussy, Dvorák, Janácek, and Mendelssohn. Each year The Juilliard School hosts a weeklong seminar to foster the artistic growth of pre-formed, pre-professional string quartets. Through intensive coaching and mentoring with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, as well as interaction with other participating quartets, students are able to refine their artistry in a stimulating artistic environment. The results are displayed in these final seminar recitals.

George Stelluto leads the Pre-College Symphony in their final performance of the season, featuring Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, Pierne’s Concertstück, Op. 39 with Pre-College harp soloist Yun Chai Lee, and Prokofiev’s Cinderella Suite.

Pre-College Orchestra

Adam Glaser leads the Pre-College Orchestra in their final performance of the season, featuring Rimsky-Korsakov’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina: Introduction (Dawn on the Moskva River), Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 with Pre-College piano soloist Youlan Ji, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36
