A brand-new Marshalls opened on Broadway between 77th and 78th street on Thursday, and they were handing out free hot dogs to customers. If you went to the grand opening, let us know what you think of the store (and the frankfurters). Personally, hot dogs don’t really get me in the mood for shopping.

Well they’ve certainly sussed out the neighborhood. Walk across the street to the West Side Market to watch shoppers elbowing each other for the chance to double-dip into open containers of cheese spread … YUCK!!!
In any city in any state, free food will attract a crowd. It has nothing to do with the Upper West Side.
well….the chain storing of the UWS….but Mmmm free hot dogs.
now put up some trees on the block
Yes they should be the big boss is not from NY
The store’s layout and selection is a real disappointment. It’s crowded and cramped with a very claustrophobic feeling, single person elevators, narrow aisles, etc.
Plus: in their women’s shoe department they put a bunch of shoes against a long wall, and the display shoes are sitting on a shelf that is probably 6 feet above the ground! Only very tall women can see them. I saw the store manager who was with a group of Marshall’s execs and mentioned it to him. They acknowledged that they already realized that it was a mistake and would be changing it. Such poor design decision! It was embarrassing. Too bad, because with the closing of Filene’s and the Gap, etc. we need some lower-priced clothing stores in the 70’s – 80’s.
Even though I still mourn the loss of Loehmann’s happy to have Marshall’s. For those who don’t already know that Marshall’s and TJ Maxx are owned by the same company it’s worth reminder that if you’re looking for a pair of candlesticks or a complete outfit and only find part of it at Marshalls you may very well find the other half at TJ Maxx (Columbus at 98th)
They should have opened at the old Loehmanns place Would have been a smarter move!
perhaps they will move there and place a home goods at this new spot (if they had sense)
the dogs sent me to the loo–twice…
layout is awful but that is the fault of the bdlg not marshalls…
why the checkout line was so long w/out an opening day sale beats me and is the sub basement….really miss the oizza parlor it replaced
A real disappointment. Not only is the layout bad, as other commenters have noted, so is the merchandise selection. The location just isn’t big enough for the store to have much to offer, given that they’re trying to house men’s, women’s, juniors, boys, girls, and shoes all on one fairly small sub-basement level. I expect a fair amount of random and generic stuff at Marshall’s, but then there are the locations that have additional racks with the items someone might actually consider buying. None of those here. The accessories and handbags are just as bad. Was hoping that this could take the place of Loehmann’s but it was a real let-down.
Yes, the layout is horrible, makes you wonder why they didn’t just take the CVS space instead.
There is no flow to the store at all. Getting past someone in the aisles is almost impossible. It’s just a mess. At Filene’s you could browse, everything about this stores screams “no what you want, get what you need and get out.” I really can’t see becoming a regular.
Marshalls sold us a phony plan. The last 3 Saturdays the store has had no air conditioning! Their so called upscale aim – has turned into a dump Not enough customer staff on the floor ..and the few they have are being overworked BTW they only earn! 8.00 per hour! in 2014 and we on the UWS should be in an uproar over this. I stopped going there! The children’s area is a dump nothing unique in their dresses for little girls and the lingerie area has deals Just looks like they shove it up in there. Why did the take this tiny spot? They should have leased the old Lohemans
