A new store called KES is opening on 82nd street and Amsterdam Avenue. The store appears to be from fashion designer Lia Kes. Kes has apparently made clothing for “Kate Hudson, Kim Kardashian and Chelsea Clinton…Kes’ clothes are simple but elegant: silk tunics on the bias, black and green dresses that drape in all the right places, and tanks made of silk or jersey knit gathered on one side for a flattering fit,” writes J Week in an article about Kes’ old SanFRancisco store, which has since closed. Thanks to Rebecca Frey for the photo.
Ann Taylor Loft is set to open at 795 Columbus Avenue between 98th and 99th, in the Columbus Square development. It’s expected to open sometime in the “third quarter of 2014,” according to Winick Realty Group, which brokered the lease.
Hombom Toys on Columbus between 79th and 80th street is in danger of closing as the landlord seeks a new tenant. “We are redoing the entire block front,” said broker Faith Consolo told the Observer. “For a long time the Upper West Side was about sneakers and sweatpants. Now, it’s lululemon and lipstick.”
Academy Floral is opening a store into the Ariel East between 99th and 100th street, Robert tells us. Academy’s current location is on 107th.
Radio Shack will close up to 1,100 stores, or about one in four, because of weak financial results. It’s not clear whether any of the local stores will close.
Planet Kids on 69th and Amsterdam still has lots of stuff to sell and it plans to close on Sunday. So stop by and get some bargains and say goodbye.
The great thing about Radio Shack is that whatever you might need to buy from them, you can be sure it will cost about 10 times what it it would cost if you could wait the 48 hours it would take to order it from Amazon. And the name – does anyone under the age of 35 even know what it means? Their corporate balance sheet is reportly a mess. This will only be the first 1,100 stores to close.
I use the Radio Shack on Bway between 92 & 93rd regularly. it’s not just the “instant service” (which comes in handy for small parts, special cables, things like Flash Drives): it’s how easily i can bring things back if it doesn’t fit… I can’t do that with online retail.
I find their prices on batteries to be less than Duane Reade and the hardware store.
Everybody’s sells batteries for less money than Duane Reade – in fact Duane Reade has become very expensive for virtually everything.
I know Radio Shack is no bargain, but when in a pinch I still like buying there instead of ordering online or, even worse, having to go to Walgreens or CVS. It’s one of the few “specialty” stores around even if it IS part of a chain.
Yeah!! We’re finally getting a grown-up women’s clothing store in the West 90s!!
Agreed! AT is a welcome/good sign.
