Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, at 91st and Amsterdam, is the only communally owned and operated Jewish funeral chapel in New York. Unlike for-profit funeral homes, Plaza is governed by clergy, community lay leaders, executives of social service agencies and philanthropists who care about your needs. The chapel is dedicated to the belief that the process of grief is not a business proposition but rather an emotional, human passage to be treated with dignity and conscience.

The chapel was founded in 2001 by a group of philanthropists along with UJA-Federation and The Jewish Communal Fund. In addition, to caring for our families Plaza has become a community resource. They have hosted 13 bereavement conferences for the community. Through the efforts of its social service committee, Plaza has partnered with The New York Board of Rabbis to distribute funds to synagogues/ families that have been affected by Superstorm Sandy. The chapel’s programs range from “Talking to Children about death”(for parents of young children) to “Jewish Burial 101” for Intro to Judaism class. In addition, they have a program called “Getting your house in Order” for adults.

Burying a friend or a family member is a sacred event. Plaza ensures that the experience is handled with compassion and care without additional pressure that one often finds in for-profit establishments. Available 24 hours a day, Plaza has a staff of 5 full time directors and two newly renovated chapels.  All services can be streamed for family members or friends who are unable to attend if the family wishes.

Whether a service is to take place at Plaza, in your synagogue, graveside or in another location, Plaza takes care of everything.  If burial takes place in another state, Israel or another country, Plaza can handle everything.

Plaza’s leaders are committed to providing services at affordable rates. In fact, the price difference between Plaza and other local chapels is staggering.  Click on the link to see the difference.  https://www.plazajewishcommunitychapel.org/price/

You can also click here to download “Graceful Exits” documents. A tour of the facility is always available. For more information, click here.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
