A man was shot around 88th street and Amsterdam Avenue early Tuesday morning after getting into an altercation with two men that was caught on surveillance video, according to police. A nearby store clerk told ABC News that he heard three shots.
In the video, the man is seen running into the middle of the intersection while being assaulted by two other men. It’s not entirely clear when the gunshots occurred.
Update: NBC News now says the gunshots came before the men punched and kicked the victim. The 45-year-old victim was shot twice in the upper body and once in the thigh. “After the shooting, the victim took a cab to St. Luke’s Hospital, more than a mile away, witnesses and police said. He is in stable condition and is expected to recover.”
The man apparently took a cab to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. According to the surveillance tape, the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Helicopters were buzzing around the Upper West Side for much of the night. Police had no one in custody as of this morning.

I walk down this strip of Amsterdam quite often and have noticed an uptick in groups hanging outside at late hours (in particular, the area between 92nd and 88th on the east side). Last night walking south around 11pm there were several small clusters of people on the street, along with two idling cars with tinted windows. I have not felt safe walking south from the low 90’s recently and find this alarming. Never really see police officers in the area.
Looks like this happened in front of the projects. As a law abiding citizen, not only do I have to subsidize the projects, I also have to fear that one of the morons coming out of those buildings is going to miss the other moron playing gangster and instead shoot me in the face when I am coming home from work at 12am. Awful.
The area north of 86th Street on Amsterdam and Broadway is not safe at night. This has only been the case for the last couple of years. I walk back/forth to the gym on 92nd often and there are always a number of shady characters / rough looking groups milling about after 10 or 11 at night, especially on Amsterdam. Last night there were a number of people hanging around the Duane Reade on Broadway and on Amsterdam around 90th looking bored and probably up to no good. I would like to see a police officer every now and then up there, but that is probably unlikely.
Get used to this and much worse.
Sounds like you are profiling and with a Del Blasio / Wilhelm Mayor things will become much much worse.
that is the only sure thing.
This morning (Wednesday) at 10am – the morning after – there were uniform officers at virtually every Broadway and Amsterdam intersection from 90th to 86th.
As a kid I’d walk up my block of 88th to my school at PS166. I thought the area was better!?
The shots woke me up, and I knew immediately it was gunfire. The circling, low flying helicopters only confirmed that.I’ve noticed that the area where this happened is noticeably more questionable, and let’s not forget there was another shooting last year on 90th around 10 pm on a Friday. So many of my neighbors are delusional and think because it’s the UWS they don’t have to worry about safety. It would be nice to see the police around now, and not just when they’re responding to a crime.
It’s Deblasio Time! Are you ready?
