POLICE SCOOTER BURSTS INTO FLAMES IN CENTRAL PARK

April 24, 2013 | 10:53 AM

A police officer’s scooter burst into flames on Tuesday at around 5 p.m. on the West 86th street transverse road in Central Park, forcing the officer to flee the vehicle, according to Geoffrey Croft of watchdog group NYC Park Advocates.

Croft says the officer was not injured although his clothes were singed. “He was lucky,” an officer told Croft. “He was in the vehicle while it was in flames, that must have been pretty scary.”

It’s not clear why the vehicle burst into flames, but this has happened before, according to Croft: a scooter burst into flames in Central Park two years ago and in Brooklyn Bridge Park last year.
