Malaysia Grill, at 224 West 104th Street, is a go-to spot for takeout for many Upper West Siders. The food is cheap and it hits the spot.
“This diminutive Upper West Side eatery on a quiet block near Broadway is a hit for three reasons: Big portions, low prices, and generally well-executed Southeast Asian comfort food,” says a New York magazine review.
Some people have clearly fallen in love: “Best Pad Thai in NYC hands down,” said one reviewer on Google+.
But the health department found some things that are not so appetizing, including evidence of mice, causing the city to shut the restaurant down this weekend.
The restaurant racked up 58 points worth of violations:
Sanitary Violations
1) Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
2) Appropriately scaled metal stem-type thermometer or thermocouple not provided or used to evaluate temperatures of potentially hazardous foods during cooking, cooling, reheating and holding.
3) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
4) Insufficient or no refrigerated or hot holding equipment to keep potentially hazardous foods at required temperatures.
5) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
6) Plumbing not properly installed or maintained; anti-siphonage or backflow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly.
