OUR TREMENDOUS LUCK: POWER OUT FOR JUST 4 CUSTOMERS ON UPPER WEST SIDE, SAYS CON ED

November 1, 2012 | 11:08 AM

Con Edison has a handy map of power outages in the city, and it shows specific blocks where power is out, explaining the cause and, in some cases, the expected restoration date. This morning, the map shows isolated outages around 73rd, 89th, 99th and 109th Streets.

Clearly, we’re very lucky on the Upper West Side. Just 60 blocks South of us, elderly people in power-less high-rises are running short on food and water and have no elevator service. And Brooklyn and Queens are doing worse. For reports from hyperlocal news sites like this one covering areas in more dire need, it’s worth checking out The Lo-Down, about the Lower East Side, and Sheepshead Bites, about Sheepshead Bay and the surrounding area. Like the West Side Rag, both are run by dedicated people living in the area.

Good morning, and thank you for posting this part of the Con Ed outage map. I walked across 73rd Street to see if any power was out, but everything looks OK. I’m on 74th betw. Amsterdam-Columbus, and here, too, everything OK except some friends say they still have no Internet service. These locations have been on the map for a few days now; wonder what’s happening?

Our internet went down too! We use Clear and the tower was out almost all day yesterday. We were borring a neighbors Wifi (don’t know what service it was) and theirs actually went out last night right around the time ours came back on!

Does anyone know how we can help our downtown neighbors? I would like to help but I don’t know how and I don’t want to be in the way either?
