Sushi Hana, on Amsterdam Avenue between 82nd Street and 83rd Street, was closed this week by the Department of Health, for a variety of transgressions. The restaurant racked up 59 total points — 28 and above tends to get you special scrutiny from health inspectors. The major violations (including evidence of various little critters) are in red.

Sanitary Violations
1) Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.
2) Food worker does not use proper utensil to eliminate bare hand contact with food that will not receive adequate additional heat treatment.
3) Evidence of rats or live rats present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
4) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
5) Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
6) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
7) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
8 ) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.

I walked by there this afternoon and there were handwritten signs taped to the gate saying that they were closed because of “interior decoration.” Don’t they realize that people will figure it out if/when they reopen and the decor still looks exactly the same?

The “interior decoration” they are doing is the removal of rats and mice and their droppings, and maybe even the elimination of the live roaches also found by the inspectors.

So it *will* look different when (and if) they (are allowed to) re-open: it will be clean.

They have had a “B” rating ever since the rating system was implemented. They were never able to get an “A” and now I see why. Nasty!
