The city is planning to add two new bike lanes to the 72nd Street transverse in Central Park, reducing car traffic on the road from two lanes to one. The lanes, one traveling East and one traveling West, will stretch from Central Park West to 5th Avenue, according to Streetsblog (although on the West side that would be difficult, because the 72nd Street transverse is interrupted before it reaches Central Park West).
Check out this diagram, courtesy of Streetsblog, showing the changes:
This is the second new East-West bike lane created this year in Central Park. The first is at 96th Street (before this year, there were no dedicated East-West bike lanes in the park). It’s also another step toward a car-free Central Park, a major goal of some bicycling advocates.
The new lanes should be created by June, according to Streetsblog.
