January 30, 2012 Weather: Mostly Sunny, High of 40 Degrees.

Notices:
We have a new list of events up this week and will be adding to it.

Enrico Miguel Thomas, a very friendly artist who can often be seen drawing the 72nd Street subway station on a subway map (he told me he’s drawn it 100’s of times), has a show up at The City Reliquary in Brooklyn.

News:
Soap opera actor Nick Santino committed suicide after euthanizing his pit bull Rocco, after friends said management and neighbors at One Lincoln Plaza made it difficult to keep the dog (despite allowing him to keep the dog after the building had enacted a no-pit-bull policy). (New York Post)

Flor de Mayo, a Chinese/Peruvian restaurant on 101st and Broadway, was shut down by the Department of Health for violations, including roaches and cold food stored at the wrong temperature. The restaurant also has an 83rd Street location that remains open (although that location also was found to have roaches at its last inspection). The 83rd Street location has a higher rating on Yelp than any other Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. (Columbia Spectator)

Can’t afford to buy a place on the Upper West Side? Try Prospect Heights. (NY Times)

A fire broke out in an elderly woman’s apartment at 205 West End Avenue on 70th Street, but no one was injured. (DNAinfo)

Local assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell, the first openly gay man elected to the state assembly, married his longtime partner this weekend. (Village Voice)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
