September 6, 2011 Weather: Rain, High of 65 Degrees.

Notices:
The Riverside Park Fund is looking for people to volunteer at the 9th Annual West Side County Fair on Saturday. “Over 20 volunteers needed from 12-6pm to help with the games booths, crowd control at the animal area, and more in Riverside Park at 70th Street and the Hudson River.”

We have a great list of events up for this week, with free movies, concerts, exercise classes, and more!

News:
It’s back-to-school time, and at least someone is excited — the bugs! The city is spending too little to get bed bugs out of public schools, critics charge, dooming us to another year of itching. They say the city budget line for bedbug control isn’t enough to keep up with the spread of the critters, and it allots just $67 an hour for the job, causing many companies to not even apply. Last year, 3,500 bed bug cases were reported. “I think it’s way too low,” said Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who introduced legislation that led to the creation of a bedbug task force in 2009. “I hear from people all the time who have had bedbugs and it costs them $400 per room.” (Gotham Schools)

A week of 9/11 remembrances was kicked off with a candlelight vigil last night at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, attended by many firefighters in town for a competition. (Calgary Herald)

Between Saturday morning and Monday afternoon, 46 people were shot in New York City, a toll that brought to mind the late 80’s and early 90’s. (NY Post)

Union reps and the management of the Central Park Boathouse are extending talks to try to resolve their conflict before the NLRB proceeds with a legal complaint. (Wall Street Journal)

A three-car crash resulted in a car bursting into flames after hitting a bus shelter. Check out our article and the video we posted of the aftermath here.
