fire 72nd

A fire in a 10th floor apartment at 201 West 72nd street forced a partial evacuation of the building and kept 20 units of firefighters busy for more than 3 hours on Thursday night.

No one was reported injured in the blaze, which was first called in at 5:34 p.m., but about 78 firefighters were called to the scene and traffic was blocked on part of 72nd between Broadway and West End. A resident told us that there was lots of smoke around the 10th and 11th floors.

The fire was declared under control as of 9:04 p.m.

Please limit comments to 150 words and keep them civil and relevant to the article at hand. Comments are closed after six days. Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
