The final meeting of 2021-2022 of the NYC chapter of the
Hearing Loss Association of America
will be held on June 7 at 6:00-7:30PM.
Our featured speaker, Christopher Caulfield, was born in Champaign, Illinois, with profound deafness in both ears. He received a cochlear implant on his left side when he was 16 months old. Because of complications from the surgery, his family opted not to give him a second cochlear implant. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and published two research papers in the field of Human Computer Interaction and Accessibility. Instead of pursuing a PhD opportunity, he attended Cornell University for his Master’s in Computer Science, where he worked on his first startup which is still running today. Christopher is now a Product Manager at Microsoft on the Xbox team. Outside of work he enjoys hiking the beautiful mountains in the Pacific Northwest with his fiance. In addition to speaking about growing up with hearing loss, he will discuss his experiences in academia and the workplace.
That night we will also award the second annual $5000 Albert B. Chen scholarship for a high school senior with hearing loss. With several worthy applicants, competition was tough for this scholarship, but we are very pleased to present the award to Jonesy Strell of Millenium High School who will be attending George Washington University where he intends to major in political science. Jonesy and Mr. Chen will both speak about accessibility and giving back to the hearing-loss community.
