The Very Rev. James Morton, who led the Cathedral of St. John the Divine from 1972 to 1997, died on Saturday.
Morton took over during a difficult time for the church and the city, and pushed ahead with social justice and artistic endeavors that have made the cathedral a central cultural institution in the city. From partnering with artists to opening a homeless shelter on the church grounds, Morton became a leader in the community. It’s worth reading his obituary in the New York Times.
The cathedral will hold a funeral service for Morton on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome.

He was truly one of the bulwark’s of this community that St. John the Divine will never see the likes of again. He and Paul Moore Jr. Since it seems the Church became a real estate developer. Who would ever have believed they would block the views of their Rose Windows with such an ugly modern building? So sad. RIP.
