MORNING BULLETIN: LOCAL CIRCUS IN TROUBLE, HAMILTON SOFTBALL, SRO FINED

June 6, 2016 Weather: Mostly sunny, with a high of 85 degrees.

Notices:
Music meets virtual reality, an Iggy Azalea concert and dozens of other local events are on our calendar.

Cafe Lalo at 201 W. West 83rd is selling a special confection for National Cancer Survivor’s Day as part of Confections for Comfort, June 5th-12th. “Proceeds from the week’s sale of this item will be donated to Chemo Comfort to support our programs,” writes Anne Marie Paolucci. Stop in and ask for the special treat.

Kim says she had her Klein bike stolen right outside Broadway Home Center hardware store at 2672 Broadway (102nd street) on June 1. You can see a surveillance video of the incident here. If you have info, you can contact the 24th precinct or email us.

Has anyone seen the hawk of 84th street? Yvonne wrote in to tell us it’s back. “A red tailed hawk has reappeared on the 84th street fire escape….I have binoculars but can only see one adult….I know that the apartment dwellers very reluctantly discarded all the nesting materials from the fire escape at the end of season 2014, because they decided that the hawks were taking up too much of their time and space over many years…but at least one is back!”

News:
The Big Apple Circus is struggling and now turning to online fundraising. “In the coming days, the Big Apple Circus will embark on an online crowdfunding campaign in an effort to raise the funds necessary to stage its 39th season on the Upper West Side in December. Leasing the space in Damrosch Park, behind Lincoln Center, costs $500,000. It takes approximately another $11.5 million to produce the circus each year. If it dissolves, mothers and fathers and children and grandparents will mourn it. The circus will join a long list of institutions in New York that reverence alone could not sustain.”

It’s tough to get a ticket to the Hamilton musical But you can at least see some of the Hamilton cast play softball in Central Park. “She gathered the players and pointed across the infield at their opponents from Les Misérables — like Hamilton, a revolution-themed musical — and urged her players to kick some “French Revolutionary” posterior. She led the pregame shout — “To the Revolution!” — and it was time to play ball.”

The city is cracking down on an SRO building on 79th street that has been challenged the laws that forbid renting residences to tourists for short-term stays. “City inspectors hit the Imperial Court on W. 79th St. with five violations on May 10 for operating as an illegal hotel after it found 99 of its 227 units were being rented out to tourists.”

Kim didn’t have her bike stolen, she gave it away by not utilizing even the minimum form of security in NYC. Had she even locked the wheel to the frame she would still have it.

This is still NYC, you need to use common sense.

Good point! Re the video: Why would any bicycle thief, riding a bike, steal an other bike?

I served on the Board of The Big Apple Greeters and we has similar fundraising problems. It is an embarrassment as both organizations provide a real feel of The Big Apple.

Maybe, just maybe, no one wants to go to this circus anymore.

According to the Urban Hawks blog, there is a pair of red-tails with one offspring at the West 84th St. nest site: https://urbanhawks.blogs.com/urban_hawks/2016/05/2016-manhattan-nests-update-10.html

the red tailed hawks have a ‘pied a terre’ at 205 west end ave, on the top floor terrace. they are both there some of the time and i can’t see if they have a nest.

I took my kid to see the Big Apple Circus once. It was great except for the use of animals–even the dogs looked frightened and confused. Take the animals out of the circus and more people will come!
