The Central Park Great Lawn will officially close for the season on Monday, Kat Brady, a spokesperson for the Central Park Conservancy, exclusively told West Side Rag.
While the lawns in Central Park typically close at the beginning of November, the Great Lawn will close two weeks earlier than typical this year to “accommodate the restoration of its ballfields.” Since 2024, the Conservancy has undergone an improvement project of its ballfields throughout Central Park, of which the fields on the Great Lawn will be the final step.
There are 26 ballfields across Central Park.
“The additional two weeks of closure will give our Turf Care team a head start on the restoration, allowing the fields time to set before reopening for the spring 2027 season,” Brady said.
The Conservancy’s Turf Care team has specifically looked to improve the infields and create a more resilient surface for heavy use and inclement weather, which will allow the fields to reopen more quickly after spring and summer storms.
“Once complete, the improvements will help ensure that Park visitors and ballplayers can enjoy the benefits of these upgraded fields for years to come,” Brady added.
