A transformer fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon led firefighters to evacuate multiple buildings on Broadway between 91st and 92nd Street. The Equinox at 2465 Broadway, as well as Le Pain Quotidien next door were evacuated after the fire was called in at 3:43 p.m., according to an FDNY spokesman. The fire led to a gas explosion, according to FDNY.

Scanner traffic forwarded by our tipster Robert indicated that as many as five buildings were evacuated and that there were high carbon monoxide levels in the building. Equinox sent out a notice to all members that the club was closed until further notice.
The fire started in the basement, and appears to have spread to the street level.
Firefighters still considered it an “active scene” as of 7:30 p.m. No one had been reported injured as of that time, and the cause was still under investigation, the FDNY spokesman said.
