After selling out its opening weekend, the New Plaza Cinema — a group that emerged to try to replace the closed Lincoln Plaza Cinemas — has released its full slate of summer films to be shown at the JCC on 76th and Amsterdam. Several of the films are based on Philip Roth books.
The release announcing the films is below.
“New Plaza Cinemas (www.newplazacinema.com) in partnership with the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan has announced the complete lineup for their summer series, now available at www.jccmanhattan.org/film. As previously announced, these community run organizations joined forces to present films in the spirit of Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, aiming to engage the audiences impacted by the closing of this film hotspot.
The lineup includes a marathon in memory of Philip Roth, who was an Upper West Sider and close friend of the cinema, including the classic Goodbye, Columbus as well as some newer film adaptations of the late author’s novels.
The series will also include short runs of films that do not have an uptown release such as The Catcher Was a Spy starring Paul Rudd, as well as films that were previously selected by Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, but were never shown due to the closing of the cinema this past January.
The New Plaza Cinema was founded by Norma Levy after the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas’ closure in December, 2017. Its mission is to create a new cinema on the Upper West Side, devoted to quality indie and foreign films from around the world.
The Carole Zabar Center for Film at The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan is one of New York’s leading presenters of cinema and conversations that pertain to our community. It presents an ongoing series, Cinematters, as well as three major film festivals: The Other Israel Film Festival, ReelAbilities Film Festival, and the Israel Film Center Festival.”

great news! kudos to all… glad they came up with an alternative for movie lovers in the UWS
I saw The Catcher Was a Spy this past Monday; what a terribly written movie! Glad someone has taken the reigns from Lincoln Plaza however – can’t wait to judge the upcoming slate equally as harshly.
This is so great to see!
This is nice news, but it kind of sucks that JCC seems to insist they all relate to Judaism in some way. Some more diversity of film-making, which LPC valued, would be nice.
Totally agree with you. How about films like “Call me by my name”. Will they be showing them?
This is great news!
great thank you for adding to our UWS joy
YAY!!! We’re so proud of YOU, and so grateful for your efforts!
Thank you so much for doing this!
