The NYC Health Department has been busy in the neighborhood, recently closing two restaurants and a bar because of violations.
Kirsh Bakery & Kitchen on 87th and Amsterdam was closed because of a permit issue. The restaurant said in a note that they’re working to get the issue corrected. Thanks to Michelle and Yael for the photos.
Update: Todd McMullen, manager of Kirsh, tells us “we are going to be open again by this evening. After spending hours trying to resolve our permit issue, we finally solved the problem and are ready to serve our loyal customers. We also want to thank all the people who stopped by yesterday to check on us and wished us well. We really appreciate everyone’s warm thoughts and concern.”
Wes End Lounge at 955 West End Avenue (107th) was also closed by the Health Department, although the exact details were not clear because they hadn’t been posted online. A note on the door said they were closed for “unforeseen circumstances.” Thanks to Patricia for the photo.
Polpette at 483 Amsterdam (83rd-84th) was closed for health violations, including evidence of mice, according to an inspection posted on the department website. The full list of violations is below. Thanks to Yael for the photo.

God bless The NYC Health Department… NOW GO AFTER THE STREET VENDORS AROUND THE MUSEUM!!!!!!
Famiglia pizza on 96 and Amsterdam also has a notice of closure due to unsafe construction.
My DH walked past Kirsh today (Thursday) early afternoon…no signs on the door, someone sitting inside looks like it’s open. We’re relieved since we love the place. Their wonderful milk bread is so delicious.
“DH”??
I thought it was Giancarlo Stanton since as a Yankees fan, he is my designated hitter.
DH = Dear husband
DW = (You guessed it) Dear Wife
SIL = Son-in-law or sister-in-law, dear or not
WTF = NSFW
Because it’s really hard on the thumbs to type full words on those tiny iPhone keyboards.
😀
BAA – but an Android.

How’s that for ironic?
DH=Dear Husband. This is common usage in the parenting groups though a little odd out of context.

“Dear Husband”?
Dear Dusband according to Wikipedia.
Just noticed the typo, but you probably figured that out already.
This kind of information is well received by the public. It’s good to know that our health is being looked out for considering the fact of our patronage to these establishments we should at least be able to eat in clean places. Not mentioned which was also closed for health citations yesterday was Mamie’s Spoonbread on 110th right off Columbus Ave 110th street.
Ever since that famous (or infamous) video of rats at that KFC/Taco Bell restaurant in Chelsea, and the scandal that unfolded afterward; DOH has gone into over drive.
Some feel the increased inspections, closings, online reporting etc… is a bit over the top; but as you say we are dealing with public health and food safety.
