Police officers trimmed some trees next to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade route on Central Park West. But a wind-blown candy cane got off course during Thursday’s parade and popped after hitting one of the trees, according to an Associated Press reporter who saw it happen. No one was reported injured.
“An Associated Press reporter was on hand as a gust of wind carried a candy-cane balloon into a branch around 10:30 a.m. near the start of the parade route on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The candy cane was smaller than the parade’s signature giant balloons.”
Priscilla Degan took the picture below right before the candy cane popped. “The second after I shot the big candy cane, it hit a tree and popped!”
Our tipster told us he saw the police officers trimming trees on Central Park West around 69th Street around 3:40 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Activists protesting rescinding of DACA protections also briefly blocked the parade route, according to the Associated Press.
“Protesters say four activists at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade jumped over barriers and briefly sat down in the street to protest the end of a program that extended protections to immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children.”
The balloon popped right near where we were standing – just north of 74th St. Fortunately it wasn’t a bigger one. A fun time was had by all!
I’m glad nobody was hurt; previous balloon accidents caused more damage.
Does anybody know what happened to the people in the DACA protest? Arrested, just shooed away, what?
One could only hope – but De Blasidiot probably let them go and broke federal law by invoking NYC as a “sanctuary” city. HE should be deported!!!
Hey NYPD, I have a tree in front of my building that needs a little pruning. Could you swing by this weekend? Thanks!
I’ve been living here since 1968 and every year I watch the inflation of the Macy*s Thanksgiving day parade at W. 77th St. to W. 81 St…. and over the years it is has changed as more and more parade spectators as the secret gets out from one generation to another the night before Thanksgiving and all through the upper West side streets the inflation of the Macy*s Thanksgiving day parade begins. Even though the first couple years I lived here there weren’t many spectators but as the NEWS grew and generations multiplied it is now up to 200,000 people plus from where I began to watch it with only a few dozen of us. I must say this year has probably been the most organized viewing the night the night before Thanksgiving that I have ever seen before so I to thank The police department and organizers for finally getting it right hope it stays this way I love the viewing hours from 1 PM to 8 PM and entering and departing as far south as possible down Columbus Avenue.
Because it’s only to be getting bigger and bigger and bigger that’s if Macy stays in business!!!
With all that said wishing you a very happy holiday from your friends on the Upper West Side!
+1!
The NYPD do a great job given how many large-scale public events we have in NYC and the corresponding security risks.
Sure, there are some lousy cops out there just like there are bad people in every profession.
But I really applaud the NYPD and think we are incredibly lucky to have such a great force.
Kudos to the 20th precinct
First of all, what was a CANDY CANE balloon doing in the Thanksgiving Day parade?
The same as Santa Claus.
yeah. should be a drumstick balloon
Keeping Santa and the Elf on the Shelf company, obviously.
Simon, you know that guy in the sleigh at the end of the parade? (Hint: There’s a theme.)
Fighting the “war” on Christmas.
Probably the same reason there’s a Santa balloon.
Here’s a scene worthy of either Mel Brooks at his zaniest (“The Producers”, “Young Frankenstein”) or the Zuckers (“Airplane!”, “Police Squad”):
Parade is moving nicely down CPW. Candy-the-Balloon is floating high above its handlers, who are gripping their ropes and occasionally glancing upward.
Suddenly there’s a loud popping sound. Wide-angle shot of spectators gasping and pointing. Pan up to reveal Candy-the-balloon rapidly falling as its helium escapes.
Candy flutters to pavement, but handlers do NOT stop. Instead they continue marching, occasionally gazing up at the empty sky above them while dragging the mangled Candy-the-Balloon down CPW. The crowd applauds as they pass.
