Do you fear falling? Falling has become an epidemic, as every 18 seconds an older adult will fall. Over 30% of men and women over the age of 65 will fall and suffer from a broken hip, knee, wrist, or shoulder. Research has shown that 40% of people who break their hips die within the year.
So what can we do? The first step is get to the doctor’s office and see if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis. The reason why it is important is because bones are not meant to break, but if you have weak bones to begin with, then you’re more prone to breaking a bone in the event of a fall.
The next step would be to check for visual, inner ear issues and to make sure you can feel the ground. If you have a nerve issue it may be hard to feel the ground which makes you more prone to falling.
Also, orthopedic issues to the knee, hip ankle, foot or back can contribute to instability. When there is a problem with one of your joints there tends to be a disconnect or slower signal from the brain to the rest of the body, which makes you more prone to a loss of a balance and compensation.
Tip to increase stability:
1. Make sure your exercise program incorporates many aspects of fitness that will help increase balance, such as working on dynamic and static balances, strengthening of the foot, ankle, hips, buttock abdominals and low back. Also, flexibility is important as it will help you to walk with longer strides and help you pick up your feet. Awareness of good posture when walking is important to avoid a fall. Reaction time or your ability to recover from a fall is another aspect that should be addressed. At Silver Stars, we show you how to fall, how to get up from the floor, and how to scoot and crawl if you’re on the floor and can’t get up.
Incorporating many aspects of fitness will help you increase your confidence. This is important because when you walk without confidence you end up taking small strides when walking and tighten muscles to protect from a fall, but instead of protecting yourself, you’re actually setting yourself for a fall.
So, if increased stability is the goal, make sure you focus on all the key elements noted above.
Our private training sessions and small group classes will help to improve your stability and strength.
