Diner en Blanc, a “secret” dinner party where the location only becomes known right before the event, occurred in the central plaza at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, with thousands of people dressed in white gathering to eat and mingle.

For those whom do not know Dîner en Blanc de Paris, is where things all began some 30 years ago (Paris, France).
Location of event is kept under tight security until noon of the day.
Event has since been exported to New York, Montreal, Brisbane and a few other places.
While have been fortunate enough to attend several in Paris, have not done the Lincoln Center version.

I kid you not, there is an entire Danielle Steel bk on the subject!
lame
agreed. for the kardashian fan crowd (which, sadly, is tremendous).
A bit of a gross generalization but based on your previous posts, not surprising.
Is this my cup of tea? No. Do I judge others for participating? No.
I can also attest to the fact (because I live blocks from the venue and was walking home when people were arriving) that the participants were an extremely diverse group of human beings.
Typical white privilege.:)
Actually looks like fun. Can’t believe I have never heard of this before. Anyone know anything else about this?
Another private event in a public space the life of the 1 percent
I observed the event, and most of the participants seemed far from wealthy. I ended up riding on the subway with them to Columbus Circle. Hardly the way the 1% travels. Just ordinary folks. It’s just a fun thing to to. And it’s not that expensive to buy a white outfit and get a white lawn chair and get together with a few people and carry a white plastic table.
What do they serve? How is the food?
You have to bring your own food and wine and table
You can buy bottles of wine for $50 at the venue
It’s a complete rip off
No, unlike Paris and other cities the NYC DEB is not a BYOB event IIRC. Booze/wine is served at the event and organizers must obtain a temporary permit.
That is the official stance; do persons in fact do bring their own? Probably but as the old advice from our mothers goes; “if you don’t behave you won’t be asked back…”
To quote Holden Caulfield, it sounds like a bunch of phonies. I should have shown up wearing bright green and eating Taco Bell and twinkies.
Tacky. Dislike. “White privilege” is too kind a term. “Get a life” is more like it.
Do you see where it indicates ‘click to enlarge, under the photos? It is obviously not a ‘white privilege’ event.
Shh – don’t upset people with facts.
every day I am more & more amazed at the stupidity that this society comes up with
Some of these comments are pretty funny.
I think GG was being facetious given the smiley face and his full comment.
I got out of the subway at 72 St and saw a LOT of people dressed in white. At least half were non-caucasian and didn’t look particularly wealthy.
Sounds like we have some sour grapes around here who feel left out!
Thanks, Mark. I thought it was obvious but for those a little slow on the uptake…
Yes, I was being facetious. I was using the “white” double meaning as a joke. It’s a white party, People!!! not a party for white people.:)hahahah
Why does everyone have a problem with others having a good time? I like that our neighborhood has all kinds of events like this. Isn’t that why we all live here in NYC and the UWS. Oh well, that’s one of the reasons I love it here. Lot’s of action and stuff to do. I guess if you just want to sit in front of screens all day it doesn’t really matter where you are. But then why pay all these outrageous rents?? (or mortgage payments)
I think some are unhappy with this because they were ignorant of it and weren’t invited.
Looks like the only thin skin isn’t in the White House!
First of all some of you clearly do not know what you’re talking about.
The Lincoln Center Diner en Blanc is as organized is far more democratic/open than say the Paris version.

While have not attended the NYC version, but have been to the Paris DEB, the former is far more “open” and integrated shall we say than the latter. You see far more representation of the various demographics of French empire in New York than Paris.
To anyone who has studied and or knows French culture/society this shouldn’t come as a shock. All that liberté égalité fraternité, is largely a crock in certain instances. That is large segments of French society are still firmly organized under rules derived from the Ancien Régime.
The Lincoln Center DEB is hardly a “lily white” affair.
What fuels the need to be so critical and harsh towards complete strangers doing something so innocuous and fun? In today’s social and political climate, it would serve everyone better if they could take a time out and just enjoy themselves doing something they like. I feel sorry for those who make everything more complicated than it really is.
Carpe Diem!
I wouldn’t do it but it looks like great fun!
I’ve attended Diner en Blanc here in NYC for a few years now. It is hard to get on the list to attend. However, it’s not expensive or exclusive in any other way than getting on this list. It costs about 40 dollars or so to attend per person. That covers the cost of their permits, the live music and DJ that they invite. We bring our own tables, chairs and food. There is no obligation to pay any more than the initial fee. We don’t receive the location until we’re nearly there. For instance, this year we lined up at 72nd street and were simply told to follow our table leader. We ended up at Lincoln Center! The event is wonderfully diverse, in age, race and gender. It’s one of my favorite parts of living in this city. Stop complaining some of you, enjoy being here!
Cool. Love New York!
How fun! How can I get invited!???!!
Ps what’s with all the negativity and judgements?
… and that’s what makes the comments section so entertaining, of course 🙂
