A user of website Reddit posted the photo below on the site, and said it was from an ATM at the Duane Reade on Broadway between 111th and 112th Streets. “It’s a credit card skimmer. It’ll store your info to be picked up by the thief later.”
Apparently, the person had tugged on the outside of the card-reader and it came right off. We’ve written several times about this phenomenon, but haven’t seen it set up quite like this.
Stay vigilant NYC. Found at my local Duane Reade on the Upper West Side. from nyc
Always… ALWAYS wriggle the card slot to see if its loose with any credit/debit card machine that sits openly in the public.
This happened to me twice at Duane Reade. Large, fraudulent charges while I had my credit card in my possession. Both times it was traced to this Duane Reade, vand suspicion was there was staff involvement.
This is why I only use ATMs at the bank locations unless I’m absolutely desperate. Not that banks are foolproof, but I feel like they’re much safer in those locked lobbies than in a DR entrance.
Never, never, ever use those stand alone ATMs. Just don’t because far to many are infested with skimmers.
Find your own bank branch or take the hit and accept the small fee (if applies) to use another bank’s machine.
Once your accounts have missing funds bank responses vary. Some are more generous than others in replacing some or all of funds; others will not do anything more than law requires until an investigation is complete.
Either way you’ll likely be asked to file/complete police reports, sign sworn affidavits that you had nothing to do with the loss of funds… Meanwhile you often still are without that money. More than a few banks treat people as “guilty until proven innocent), when they file such claims.
Also heaven help you if checks start bouncing because of the unauthorized withdrawals.
Don’t buy Judy Bond Blouses.
Duane Reade has Chase ATMs which are Blue not Green, I call BS.
