A new butcher shop opens Wednesday, as a bagel and sandwich shop gets closer to opening.
The hotly anticipated White Gold butcher shop opens Wednesday at 375 Amsterdam Avenue at 78th Street. It’s a whole-animal butcher shop from Spotted Pig owners April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman that will also have a restaurant opening Nov. 1. It replaces the short-lived gluten-free restaurant Risotteria.
Eater wrote a long piece about it.
During the day, the restaurant portion is a blend of counter service and full-service, where rotisserie chicken, breakfast sandwiches, and house-made cold cut sandwiches inspired by classic bodega fare are ordered at the butcher counter and then delivered to tables. It will offer plenty of to-go options, like a variety of English-style pasties — expect root vegetables, beef short rib, skirt steak, or cheese and potato as fillings. They’re even catering to kids. The shop will have a “hot dog happy hour” around when school lets out — a way for kids to grab and go an afternoon snack. Besides the prepared food, the butcher shop will be selling meat for home cooking, pickles, chili relish, kombucha, bone broths, coffee, and more.
A host will come in at dinner time, though the vibe for the 38-seat restaurant still be relatively casual. The slim menu will offer about five options in each category (appetizers, snacks, entrees), and the dishes will be simple and “meats-and-potato” style, Bloomfield says.
You can also see the meat you’re about to eat before it’s cooked, which reminds me of this Portlandia sketch.

Zucker’s Bagels, which has been under construction at 273 Columbus Avenue (72nd-73rd) for months, is now expecting to open in November. We last wrote about it here.
NY Hair Co. on Amsterdam between 85th and 86th is closing after the death of the owner. The stylists from NY Hair Co. will work at Salon 84 at 162 West 84th Street.
We have gone many years without a bagel store and now we have two! I just heard from the people at H&H that they have finished construction at their 86th / Broadway location and they are now waiting for the gas to be turn on by Con Ed.
I think you meant 86th/Columbus, that’s welcome news.
I so miss REAL authentic bagels such as H&H. When will they reappear on the upper west side?
These ugly, huge, bagels are a tragedy! and certainly not a real bagel! Real bagels are wonderful! If you do not know the difference, I think the bagels in the long narrow shop on the West side of BWAY about 89th st are THE BEST! and are H&H! Go try them……THEY ARE AUTHENTIC.!!
Last Saturday morning I went to orwashers at about 10 am and procured three bagels that were in my opinion the best bagels I have had outside of montreal. They were warm from the oven and you could actually taste the sesame and poppy flavors, slightly crisp outer and chewy centers.
Is there any news on when Bella Luna is supposed to reopen? Maybe I missed it in previous issues; we are looking forward to seeing it take place!
Looking forward to Zucker’s Bagels opening. The bagels at 72nd St Bagel are okay, but the service is among the slowest I have ever seen. It’s almost as if they only hire the worlds slowest moving individuals. The guy at the register is agonizingly slow moving. Ugh!
I do agree with you about the slow service, but I think the bagels at 72nd St. Bagel are the best on the UWS, even better than Absolute Bagels, which are excellent. Never been to Zucker’s, let’s see if they are any kind of rival. BTW I had “the best bagel in Manhattan” (or so lots of publications say), from Black Seed Bagels, and it was stale and pretty awful tasting.
Bagels are good and the service is slow. But what is really unacceptable is how dirty and run down and just outright nasty the place is.
+1 – 72nd Street bagel just feels very dirty and sticky
I really hope the neighborhood embraces White Gold. So exciting to have a dedicated, skilled butcher back in the area.
Ditto, it’s a real coup for the neighborhood.
I stopped by tonight and was told they’d sold out of all the prepared foods (meat pies and whatnot) by mid-afternoon, so that’s a good sign of the excitement.
P.S. The meats all looked gorgeous, and I saw that they sell cordon bleu sausages, which sound just amazing.
Pasties???
I live next door to the new H&H bagel. I just looked at my WIFI Networks and see that H&H will offer guest WIFI.
I found a solution to the school issue specifically regarding the school that nobody wants to send their child to. Attach a bagel shop to it. JFCOMMFG with the bagels.
Actually that is true – good idea!
Open up an artisanal foodie place and the hordes will come to PS 191.
If not bagels, then a branch of Levain or Jacob’s Pickles will no doubt do the trick.
Explain?
AWESOME!
A real Butcher and Bagels!
Next, we need a Doughnut Plant on 92nd Street, Please!
That could be the death of me. I would never be able to leave it.
