Bicycle riders were surprised on Tuesday night after the city closed a portion of the Greenway in Riverside Park South to make way for construction. Between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for the next two weeks, bikes will be rerouted through the park between 59th and 62nd, a parks department spokesman wrote in an email.
The NYC Parks Department has embarked on a major reconstruction project in Riverside Park South to add new volleyball courts, bathrooms and other amenities.
The Greenway’s closure surprised some riders, who argued that the department should have given riders advanced notice. Bicycling advocate and attorney Steve Vaccaro tweeted that the construction itself isn’t the concern: “lack of notice was the problem!”
Never go down there.
gives me a nosebleed
I bike along there all the time.
So we have to make a 2 minute detour? Big deal.
Lets not turn this into a big “no one told me” whine-fest. I mean for gods sake – people chill out. You don’t have to get all bent out of shape and aggravated every time someone doesn’t fully cater to your notion of how other people should behave.
Honestly…lawyers…
+1million
Seriously, you want a twitter feed for every construction project that the city undertakes? Perhaps they should have consulted with you first and planned it around the time you are out of town on vacation?
I ride that way all the time too, the detour isn’t a big deal.
Whining lawyers.
Why can’t they work around the Greenway?
Small inconvenience for a big payoff.
So no gratitude for this? “…new volleyball courts, bathrooms and other amenities.” Bicycling ‘advocates’ never cease to amaze me.
This is actually very serious and probably will and should become a lawsuit against the city.
And guess who pays for that?? that’s right
Thanks DeBlasio. Is there anything this guy CAN do right??
You should be happy this section of the park is a public space and not private as it once was!
Riverside Park South was built by the builders of Trump Place over a decade ago as Trump began the project there and not associated with the NYC Parks Dept. Trump did not lower the raised highway as promised, but he build the Riverside Park extension. The developers in charge of the park couldn’t afford to sustain policing it and upkeep earlier on was tough. (When it first opened there was a gate to w68th St entrance on Riverside Blvd that would lock after sunset). RSP South Commission gave this section of the park to NYC Parks Dept who are spending $ to update it for the whole city rather than the tenants of the apartment buildings where I used to live. PS this is why the volley ball court/baseball field at the base of the staircase at 65 was private and run by La Palestra which is located in 80 Riverside Blvd apt bldg.
Is this sarcastic? What does this have to do with De Blasio? You ok?
Huh? It’s a detour. Adjust and deal.
Bill de Blasio is also responsible for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Pearl Harbor, and all the crime in New York City in the 1970s. 🙂

NOT to mention:
1) the Zika virus;
2) Global Warming;
3) bad television programs, etc. etc.
The article refers to “a portion of the Greenway”–could you please specify the area/streets?
Sorry, 59th to 62nd. WSR
Oh, the humanity!
