A “Top Chef” is about to openĀ a new restaurant on the Upper West Side that’s both Kosher and Mexican, and allegedly very tasty.
MexiKosher, a Kosher Mexican restaurant run by Top Chef contestant Katsuji Tanabe is scheduled to open this week at 100 West 83rd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam, Julie tells us. “The authentic kosher Mexican eatery is a small shop with 15 bar stools serving all of the favorites from the original Mexikosher shop in LA,” Yeah That’s Kosher reported. “The menu is identical to LAās, with one additional special offering: Torta Ahogada ā a sandwich fully dipped in spicy sauce.”
The owner has quite a backstory: “My name is Katsuji Tanabe, and I sell tacos in Beverly Hills,” he said, drawing laughter. “I’m a Mexican-Japanese who owns a kosher restaurant.” Check out the menu here. Thanks to Iris, Solana, Corrie, Julie and other tipsters.
Europan Cafe on the West side of Broadway between 93rd and 94th Street is closing after 15 years, citing increasing costs and the expiration of its lease. Here’s a close-up of their farewell sign. Thanks to Paul, Ruby, Ellen and others for the tips.
Super Runners Shop closed its location on Broadway between 94th and 95th at the end of July. There’s another location on 77th and Amsterdam. Thanks to Ruby for the tip.
All My Children Daycare is opening a new location at 101 West 85th Street. Learn more here.
Broadway Pizza finally reopened at 2701 Broadway between 103rd and 104th street after a prolonged closure due to a gas leak in the building that also shuttered other restaurants. Thanks to Keith for the tip.
Fit Juice opened inside of Crossfit SPOT at 55 Amsterdam Avenue.
Thanks to everyone who sent in tips! Please keep them coming, even if you’re not sure whether we already reported an opening or closing.
I suspect the owner of the Europan Cafe building has been waiting for this moment since the day Pay-Less Shoes and then Radio Shack vacated. You will notice there has been no attempt to ever rent these two long-vacant spaces. I predict all three buildings will be leveled and something large will appear.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Any row of one-story buildings on Broadway is a prime target for development. I’ve lived here long enough that I can think like a developer. Ha.
Good riddance to Europan and their food was awful just bland as can be. And what’s up with leaving the chocolate babka in the open for hours at a time like that?
Is the mustard shop on 68th and Columbus closing? Lots of construction on it. Hope a restaurant goes in.
There was another post saying the mustard shop was going to do a bit of renovation.
Too bad. Waste of space. Nobody ever in there. Who shops for $40 mustard jars? Oh and they have pricey vinegar too! LOL.
Giving rise to the expression “The check is in the Maille”.

“Super Runners Shop closed its location on Broadway between 94th and 95th at the end of July.”
This should make it clear as to why.
Just another store leaving and an empty store front in the 90’s. When are folks going to recognize the issues in the 90’s? Blind opinions about social services in the 90’s. Gotta love trader joes coming, an optimistic event.
As far as maille mustard shop goes, I fill my crock for 9 dollars every few months and have the best Dijon in the city so not sure why folks call it 40 dollar mustard. I get “fancy things” are incomprehensible for some and are just luxury items, but in other countries things like butter, bread, mustard, and wine can be bought at small specialty shops even by the working class.
“When are folks going to recognize the issues in the 90ās? Blind opinions about social services in the 90ās.” Keith
So you think that the owner of Europan Cafe is lying about the increasing costs and the expiration of its lease, but that it is really “social services”? I guess you can think anything.
The costs of rent are universal across the city. There is no doubt that retail rents are high and difficult to maintain a profit. But that does not remove the fact that there are more empty storefronts developing in the 90’s.
Thanks for these!
Any update on when Orwasher’s is opening?
…or Trader Joes on Columbus in the 90s?
Coucha, Trader Joe’s won’t be open till beginning of next summer, or so they say. I live in that building and I can tell you that nothing has been done so far. Also I wonder where the loading dock will be. Can’t be on Columbus because that will be front of store and there is too much traffic with 2 bus lines. 93rd is entrance to the building and next to that is our garage. 92nd has Party City’s loading dock, exit from our building where the garbage is brought out, and the Manhattan Children’s School. So what am I missing?
Maybe they’re thinking that we don’t need no stinkin’ schools?
Chiu’s Laundry & Dry Cleaning on 69th (next to the former Telepan) closed this weekend. I believe unexpectedly, but I’m not sure. They were cleaning out everything on Sunday morning when I walked by.
LOVE Mexikosher! Ate there twice in LA and the menu was always changing and it was out of this world!!
Unrelated but please follow-up: What is happening with Planet Fitness and the Metro movie house property??
Haven’t seen any construction.
The 90s really need a “spark,” getting rundown with all the vacant store fronts. We are lacking descent places to eat and shop. Just hope we don’t revert back to the 70s.
As Kenneth states, perhaps this just might do it!
The leveling “spark”?
The leveling AND THEN rebuilding spark.
