An all-too-familiar sight: empty tennis courts at Brandeis High. Photo by Kim Watkins.
The free kids’ tennis program at Brandeis High School on 84th Street was cancelled because of permitting problems again on Monday, but all systems are go for Wednesday, according to the head of the tennis program and Councilmember Helen Rosenthal’s office.
We received a copy of the permit, and it shows that the New York Junior Tennis League should have had access to the courts starting July 8: last Friday. But school officials blocked them anyhow, leaving dozens of kids out of luck on both Friday and Monday. With the permit in hand, however, the league is confident that there won’t be problems on Wednesday. So show up at 2 p.m., with or without a racket. The league will meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until late August.
The City Parks Foundation is also offering free tennis for kids age 6-16 at the Central Park tennis courts on 93rd Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. “For all sites, lessons for 6-8 year olds are held the first hour, 9-12 year olds the second hour and 13-17 the third hour.”
