Early Sunday morning, in Riverside Park at 103rd Street, the West Side Little League championship game was held for the 12 & under Majors Division.
The game between the Ravens and the Bulls was a nail-biter. In the end, the Ravens — coached by Alex Simpson, Bennett Lieberman and Karl Woitach, with sponsorship by Schatzie the Butcher — came out on top 4-3 and were crowned the 2016 champions. The Bulls, coached by Sarah Drake, Illia Sejdho and Barry Chung, were sponsored by Modells.
The roster for the championship Ravens is as follows:
Ellington F.
Tai G.
Nick H.
Ethan J.
Jory L.
Xander L.
Oskar L.
Jake M.
Sam M.
Austin S.
Daniel S.
Luke W.
Congratulations to everyone who played and coached this year.
Congrats!
Terrific. I was at the game and it was very exciting…. wonderful spirit and sportsmanship
Championship in June?
Shouldn’t it be in the fall, at the end of the season?
Little League season is in the Spring.
Oh, thanks. I guess I was thinking of the regular baseball season. Also, the “Little League World Series”, which I recall being much later, toward the end of the summer. Makes sense, though, for Little League season to end before the school year does, as many children go away for the summer then.
….
WSR, thanks for fixing the photo bug. Just in time for these cuties.
Any photos of them playing?

One of my favorites from legendary master of the art of story-telling, Jean Shepherd is his recounting of his experiences playing baseball, completely casually and impromptu, with his boyhood neighborhood friends and what happened when one of the fathers organized them into a league-team:

(And no, I get absolutely nothing in return for publicizing all these OTR links– except the satisfaction of sharing this great but sadly now lost art form and knowing that there will almost certainly be at least one or two folks out there who will appreciate it.)
