The magnificently flat and well-groomed lawn inside Central Park around 69th street is the home field for the New York Lawn Bowling Club, and the club is now looking for more members. They’re urging people to come out on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. to learn more about the club and to consider joining the group.
C’mon you know you look good in white!
Joining is easy and remarkably affordable, given that it would appear to the casual observer to be a haven of the moneyed elite. “Mortimer, it’s time for our lawn bowling match with the Rockefellers!” It costs just over $100 for the season, and that includes a NYC Parks Department permit to use the greens and access to club equipment and social events.
Here’s more from Wes at the club:
The New York Lawn Bowling Club, the oldest and the largest operating outdoor lawn bowling club in the Northeast, is proud to announce the 90th anniversary of its founding. To mark this historic occasion, the club is celebrating with an invitation to all New Yorkers to join in a sport steeped in history, tradition, competition and camaraderie.
The New York Lawn Bowling Club was founded in 1926 and has maintained residence north of Sheep Meadow in Central Park and is part of a regional (Northeast Lawn Bowling Association), national (BowlsUSA) and global community of bowlers. The New York Lawn Bowling Club has held and won regional tournaments, and is famous for hosting bowlers from far off places as Australia, England and South Africa. Players compete by rolling four oblong biased bowls along a flat grass surface aiming to place their bowl closest to a smaller target called the “jack”, “It’s a game of skill and distance that fully explores the balance between strength and finesse,” said current Club Vice President and Coach, Ryan Hastu.
We’d like to invite our neighbors to join us on Saturday, May 7th as we kick off our summer 2016 season. Furthermore, everyone is invited to learn more about the pastime and learn ‘how we roll’ every Monday at 5pm in May and June to try their hand at bowling. More information about the club can be found at www.nybowls.com.
Minor correction – While the season kicks off on Saturday, lessons and “Open Bowling” kicks off on Monday, May 9th. See you on the Greens! (Whites, while stylish, are not mandatory)

Oh! So this is all about ‘Bowl Movements’, eh !!
And IF the Lawn Bowlers can be called “Lawn Guys” does that mean they have to live on ‘Lawn-Guy-land’ ??
