A woman was severely burned in a fire at 53 West 72nd street on Sunday morning, according to a witness and a report in the Post.
David Torres, who took the photos above and below, said one person was taken to Cornell Hospital with very serious burns. The Post says the victim was a 69-year-old wheelchair-bound paraplegic woman. It took firefighters about an hour to battle the blaze, according to the Post.
I can see in the photo that the fire truck and extended ladder are positioned on the east side of Columbus Ave. between 72nd and 73rd Sts. The fire must have occurred at the back of the building overlooking Columbus.
That’s terrible. That poor woman.
Is that a regular rental building? I just wondered if this poor woman was alone, or if she did have assistance if there was no way to get out of the apartment. My building has one staircase and the roof and I’m still not sure how I’m supposed to get out if the floors below me are on fire. I assume go to the roof, but is that a smart thing to do if the building below it is burning down?
