This burger patty’s been cooking awhile.
It’s been years — literally years — since we first heard that highly touted burger joint Bareburger planned to open a new restaurant on the Upper West Side.
The windows at the location at 975 Columbus Avenue just North of 97th street have been papered over for months, giving the vague impression that something was going on inside. In January a spokesman told us “We are in the process of getting permits, construction and the logistics but it will open. I just don’t have a date.”
But the chain now appears to actually be opening, as the paper is off the windows. Amelia Gerwitz, who sent in the photo above, told us that chairs and tables are all set up inside. A company rep said the company is targeting April 6 as the opening date.
Bareburger is known for organic meat and specialized burgers — they’ve even served ostrich and wild boar burgers. Here’s the menu at their West 46th street location.
Thanks to Marissa, Phil and Amelia.
Finally some good news from West Side Rag.
would have loved to see this closer to shake shack to have a little burger battle action. 97th is like, far, from me. maybe i’ll visit after a nice walk on a spring/summer day.
So you really didn’t want it close to Shake Shack, you just wanted it near you.
You know, Bob, some people live above 96th street, even tho most restaurants believe their delivery teams will fall off the earth after 96th. We deserve new and delicious restaurants too.
How did they afford to pay rent on an empty space for 2 years?
Retail leases are not the same as your apartment lease. It’s possible that they were not paying rent for that time.
Aren’t there enough burger places already?
Not in this immediate area. It will be nice to have some upscale options vs. the McD’s on Broadway and 96th.
