Police say the woman depicted in the drawing above has threatened two women on Riverside Drive with a knife and demanded their money.
They released the following descriptions of the incidents below:
1) On Sunday, January 18, 2015, at 1730 hours (5:30 p.m.), the victim, a 72-year-old female, was walking in the vicinity of West 89 Street and Riverside Drive when the suspect, armed with a knife, approached her and demanded the victim’s purse. The victim complied and the suspect fled with the purse. There were no reported injuries.
2) On Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 1840 hours (6:40 p.m.), the victim, a 62-year-old female, was sitting on a bench in the vicinity of West 84 Street and Riverside Drive when the suspect, armed with a knife, sat down next her and demanded her money. The victim stated that she had no money and began to scream. The suspect then fled the scene empty handed. There were no reported injuries.
The suspect is described as being in her mid-twenties, 5′ tall, and weighing 125 pounds with long, black curly hair.
If you know anything about these incidents, or recognize the suspect, you can call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), submit a tip via www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or text CRIMES (274637) and then enter TIP577.
Hat-tip to Gothamist.
The 24th NYPD Precinct needs to increase foot patrols along Riverside Drive near the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. Now that the weather is improving, more children are playing outdoors in that area, so let’s ensure their safety! Sadly, things are getting out of hand in this area of the city. Please contact the 24th precinct at (212) 678-1811 or stop by 151 W 100th St, New York, NY 10025
If you feel your comments and/or concerns are not being taken seriously by NYPD, notify your district representative. 10024 is covered by two districts 10th & 13th. Jerrold Nadler is the Party Democrat representing New York’s 10th District (10024). His office can be reached at (202) 225-5635. His website is http://www.nadler.house.gov
I don’t know if it is a bureaucratic backlog or what, but wouldn’t it be more effective if the NYPD had released this information at the most a day or two after the crime was committed?
Blah blah blah the UWS is safer than ever! Blah blah it’s just like the 70s! Blah blah if you don’t like it move to the suburbs, this is NYC you have no right to personal safety…crime goes with the territory!
I guess political correctness demands that the race of the mugger not be revealed.
From the drawing it looks like she is of African American decent.
But to state so is racist, according to the PC patrol.
Do you have an issue with race, Zeus? You seem to be the one who keeps bringing it up. Hope you’re not repressed.
You guys are a regular riot.
I have zero issue with race.
But don’t you think that it will easier to avoid or catch this robber if her race was mentioned?
As fare as repressed…no, thank you, I am not, but at time I get depressed reading some of the comments here by some blue blood liberals, and conservatives to be, once they will too get mugged.
Would it surprise you if I told you I was a conservative, and still found your fascination with race to be ridiculous? If her race is the only thing helping you fight crime, then I rest my case.
I would just like to respond to some points that I hadn’t gotten to in my previous post.
Siddhartha wrote,
Huh? Neither zeus, nor I nor anyone else here said anything of the kind.
We are discussing a description of a crime suspect, written and published for the purpose of helping people to identify said suspect. It is only logical that such a description contain as many details as possible that could help with such an identification. The racial makeup that a person appears to be of, can, more often than not, serve as an extremely relevant detail in helping identify said person. (No, Siddhartha, not “the only” detail that can be helpful, much less “the only thing helping you fight crime”, as you incredibly suggested that zeus had suggested. But one such detail and, often at least, a critical one.)
Politically and ideologically motivated fantasies, obfuscations and evasions notwithstanding, basic descriptions of racial appearance that have become standard are, more often than not, quite clear to most, if not nearly all, people (whether they admit it or not.)
In the article at the top of this page, we read,
In that sentence, we are told the suspect’s apparent age-range, height, weight and the color and type of her hair. Yet, for some reason, no mention is made of the skin complexion or facial features of this same individual-in-question. Can anyone honestly not find such an omission curious?
Even if not completely clear in this case, based on the sketch, the description could have at least included something like, “Dark-skinned with facial features that suggest likely black African ancestry.” If enough people were to agree with the contention expressed by the poster “joe” (March 23, 2015 at 1:20 pm), then a sentence such as the following could be added. “Some of those viewing the sketch of the subject that was released, found hints of Maltese, Yugoslavian, Creolian or Egyptian ancestry.”
Bruce Bernstein suggested that any such description would be rendered superfluous, gratutious or redundant by the sketch of the suspect that was released. Well, wait a minute. By that logic, why include the details about the suspect’s hair that were included? I mean, is there anything that reading or hearing the words, “black curly hair”, can add to what one can see in the sketch? A picture is worth a thousand words, as the old cliché that we are all so familiar with goes.
In reality, however, there are perfectly valid and logical reasons for releasing the sketch along with a written description that includes as many potentially relevant details as possible.
Perhaps the most obvious and likely one that comes to mind is a case where the description of the suspect would be read over an audio-only format, such as a radio newscast. But even in the case of television, the possibility of someone hearing the description being read but being distracted from viewing the screen for the presumably short time that the sketch was displayed for, hardly seems remote.
thank you Mark.
Sadly, we don’t ALL know this… but we should.
We ALL know what people like him are really saying when they talk about the broken Broken Windows Theory.
Ok, you are a conservative.
Good for you.
I am libertarian. Good for me.
I have no idea why you refer, time after time, to my so calle fascination with race.
The only ridiculous thing here is your fascination with my so called fascination.
Get over it, look in the mirror and remember, the first to smell, must be under his behind.
Cheers
not true…she could be Yugoslavian or Creolian or Egyptian…..My moneys on the Isle of Malta
It’s time to pay a visit to the eye doctor.
Kind of like – URGENT!
(The following is in response to the responses to zeus and the subsequent exchanges between zeus and his detractors that ensued.)
Pseudo-psych suggestions/speculation that a poster is “repressed” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) are neither relevant nor appropriate.
The political label which a poster applies to himself means little. Such categorizations mean little more than whatever the individual applying them wants them to mean.
The omission, however, of any details concerning racial appearance from a description of a crime suspect is absolutely relevant. Very much so. As is the calling of attention, as zeus did, to such a glaring omission. Relevant and completely appropriate.
Those who attempt to distract and divert from a legitimate point or question by attempting to discredit the one who raised it, only discredit themselves.
Thank you Independent.
You made my point clearer than I did.
And I hope that you will not be smeared by others the way that I was.
I find it disturbing when one does not agree with a point of view that is not their own, the word race and racist is used.
In a way, it shows their own lack of imagination, and even their own form of racism, not so much by race itself, but rather by separating themselves from ones who may not be of the same political school.
Cheers one and all.
Looks like winter may finally be over.
Thank you, zeus. I appreciate the the kind words and I’m glad you appreciated my post.
ummm… so you’ve got a sketch of her. what race is she?
(I don’t have much of an idea… she could be one of many ethnicities. which proves that “race” is an artificial construct and doesn’t have much meaning in catching a criminal.)

Seriously? when a drawing of the suspect was released? it seems that her “racial appearance”, whatever the hell that means, was not “omitted.”
Well, hello again Bruce Bernstein,
So you decided to join the fray. Bravo!
I kind of was missing you here – NOT!
A criminal mugs women in broad daylight, with a knife as a weapon no less, and all you think about is being so PC as not to harm a fly.
Time to say goodnight Gracie, so:
Good night Bruce and all other bleeding hearts.
Pleasant dreams.
i guess that means you’re not able to answer my fairly simple questions. So instead we get insults…
Bruce,
No insults were intended.
Lighten up a bit.
Life is short, and so are we.
